Hobby Ideas for quarantine (self.Blind)
submitted by CrochetTangles
My grandmother is 94 and has been visually impaired for most of her adult life. Before COVID, she was very active in her community and spent a lot of time with others. Now she’s housebound and stir crazy so my family is trying to find hobbies for her.

She doesn’t use the internet so most options are off the table. She won’t use an iPad or anything more complicated than a television. Puzzles, crosswords and word searches are too difficult for her to see and her local library is closed so she can’t check out audiobooks. I just worry about her mental health.

Can anyone suggest anything? I appreciate any ideas and thanks to anyone who reads this.

Check out the National Library Service. They send audio books to blind people all across the United States.

My mom uses this and has loved it! Fair warning, you may need to help her load the books into the device. But it's so worth it!

Thank you!

No problem. I have been a user of NLS since I was a kid. It is a great service.

Can she hike?

My dad is almost in his '80s but he regularly goes out on walks. Walking is great stimulus for the body.

Aside from booze, maybe some chess? You said she doesn't want to use an iPad or anything, but if you can convince her, the free chess app can let you play against anyone in the world while you improve your skills. It's pretty easy too.

Free chess app? Is it accessible for blind people? I don’t know about this.

Is she fully blind?

Where are you based? The U.K. has a programme called Talking Books and it’s like a distance library for audio books

What a cool programme! Unfortunately we’re in the US. Thank you for the suggestion!

The U.S. has the National Library Service as well. An Audible subscription would be beneficial probably, but you would either need to play the books on a tablet, smartphone, or Alexa smart speaker. I am blanking on the app name, but some libraries have an audio book virtual library. There are several classic books that have audio versions available for free if you search the internet. I hope that this helps.

Ok so I'm really late to the game on this one but my mom uses a device especially for people with limited vision. My mom also has hearing issues, and this machine allows her to slow down or speed up and I believe the pitch of the reader is adjustable as well. This is actually a service that's provided for free either from the state or foundation for the blind. (If you are interested, let me know and I'll call my mom for details).
