Accessibility on Instagram (self.Blind)
submitted by Marie_reitan
Hello friends. I'm trying to make my Instagram feed as accessible as possible, and so I have a question.
What do you prefer between photo descriptions and alt tekst? Pros and cons?
All the love from a stranger on the internet ♡

instagram is such a visual platform. i wonder how many blind people use it.

Hmm, I don't really know? There's like 11k posts using the accessibility hashtag tho, so like somebody's gotta be on there right?

digital accessibility covers a wide range of disabilities. plus you get all the able bodied activists that want to show everyone how good they are and the business people who want to promote their accessibility services to other companies.

Yeah that's true

Check out Molly Burke’s account on Instagram. She is a YouTuber who is blind and always adds a brief photo description to her photos. I would recommend simply copying the format she uses.

Yes I love her! ♡
That's what I'm doing now, but then I saw this infographic thing that told me it was better to use alt tekst, so I got a bit confused 😝

There the same thing. Though I don't think instagram lets you put alt text, only captions. Voiceover kind of guesses what the photo is though or theres the app seeingai that does a better job at describing it. Could always put a bit of a description in the caption though.

Cool news! Instagram does let you put alt text now! When you’re creating a post, after you enter the text and location and tags, scroll all the way to the bottom and hit advanced settings. There, you can click edit alt text, and type it in. Alt text is read by screen readers. Photo descriptions are read when the caption is read too, but folks who use magnifiers only can also benefit from the description typed out.
