Blind / Low-vision men: Do you have facial hair, and if so how do you maintain it? (self.Blind)

I have.

I maintain it... badly.

No, all jokes aside, I use a beard trimmer when I feel like it's getting a little too long, combined with a scissors to try and even out patches I don't quite get right with the trimmer.

Before COVID, I'd always get a beard trim at the barber when getting my hair cut, and that was generally enough to keep it looking fairly respectable for a few months. Now, the barbers here aren't allowed to do beard trims anymore, so I'm exclusively using trimmers and scissors.

I am a woman. I inherited my grandma’s chin hairs. I have my sisters tell me if they notice one I didn’t catch with a magnifying mirror ;)

Before the pandemic, I'd get a beard trim at the barber when I was feeling fancy, other than that I use a beard trimmer with the guard set to 12mm or so for the main beard and then take the guard off for direct trimming around my lips, mustache cleanup, and clearing up my cheeks and under my chin. Will do a shave every few weeks for the under chin and cheek areas, plus use a straight edge held against the corner of my mouth and angled up toowards the top of my earlobe as a guide for the blade so I don't remove too much when shaving my cheeks.

I did go for a whole year without every touching it or shaving just to get an awesome hockey beard, but was much happier with it trimmed :)

Yeah because women never get their moustaches waxed!

I have had a goatee in the past. I shaved where needed and did the rest when necessary with a trimmer. Had a full beard for a while maintained with trimmers. Now I just shave in the shower since it’s not like I need a mirror and it keeps me from accidently missing shaving cream on my face.

yes, my wife does it for me, before her i just kept clean shaven

Yes. For basic maintenance, I typically use a set of clippers with a guard set to 5. I then use a small pair of beard-trimming scissors to do detail work along the underside of my mustache. Sometimes I'll use a straight razor if I need to look especially well-groomed, but it's been less of a priority since social distancing became commonplace.

Hello,

Of course I do. I usually completely shave it with an electric razor. I touch it from time to time in order to check the parts that need shaving then continue accordingly.

For me, I'm sighted but technically legally blind, or close to it, without glasses. I have 20/20 vision corrected. anyway. I have found that shaving is mostly done by feel. I can't see the tiny hairs on my face unless I have a magnified mirror. Even with one I still cant see everything. The best way to make sure you are clean shaven is to feel around. Your fingers can feel way better than your eyes can see in this case. I don't know if that qualifies me as blind enough to post here, but that's what I do.

If you have 20/20 vision with correction, most countries would not classify you as having a visual impairment.

HUH? I see your point. But I wear glasses? If I didn't have them I'd be visually impaired...? I'm definitely not blind. I'm also not fully sighted either. I still have trouble seeing stuff. I'm in between.
CloudyBeep 1 points 2y ago
I know lots of people who wear glasses, but that doesn't make them legally blind since it is assumed that they will wear glasses when performing daily activities and that wearing glasses means that they can perform daily activities in the same way as sighted people and without the need to use any of the alternative techniques of blindness. Even though your eyes aren't perfect, it seems that it can be completely mitigated, and from a functional standpoint, you are a sighted person.

In the US, to be judged legally blind, you need to have less than 20/200 vision in the better eye with the best possible correction or a visual field of 20° or less in the better eye (the standard visual field is about 90° in each eye).

Yes I do.

I dont maintain it. I like to call the look "lazy", its working out so far.
feoh 1 points 2y ago
I had a beard for years but also being fine & gross motor impaired I wasn't very good at maintaining it, so after my wife referring to my license photo as "My Lybian Terrorist Look" (with apologies to any Lybians reading this.) I decided to go clean shaven and have stayed that way ever since.

I miss my beard, but facial hair is one of those things that if you want to look put together you have to either do well or not at all. YMMV of course!

I have an electric razer, I first use the beard trimmer part, and then I use the face shaving part. I haven't gotten into a good habit sometimes my beard is more unruly than it should be. Sometimes I go to the mall to have my beard completely shaved by the barber shop for men they do that with a straight razor and shaving cream and after shave. .

I’m not blind or VI, but I’m an uncle of a 13 year old who was born blind- recently I was chosen as the person to teach him how to shave- I went with him and picked out an electric groomer that felt well in his hand. Hoping to follow this to get more insight for him in the future.
