Text to Speech (TTS) options for Windows 10? (self.Blind)
submitted by charp021
I have ADHD and used to use a Macbook. With it I could highlight text and the native text to speech function would read what was highlighted. It was so great, I used it while in college to read textbooks, audiobooks, journal articles online. It was extremely helpful to have the speech playing while I followed along with the text. It helped me continue reading through each paragraph rather than getting stuck focused on the wording. I had to move on because I needed to keep on pace with the audio. I was able to get three degrees because of it.

Now, I own a Windows 10 computer and I can't seem to find a way to do that. The native text to speech ability, "Narrator," as Windows calls it, seems to be only geared towards those with low vision/blind. I can't find a way to change the setting so that I can just highlight text and have it read.

I tried looking for an app that could do this and also didn't have much success find an application that worked globally. I tried Natural Reader as an extension on my browser, which works decently but it only works on the browser. I tried downloading the desktop version and its fine, but I have to copy and paste everything into the app or import a file in order to have it read.

There has to be a program that can do it on Windows. I want highlight, hotkey, speech. Global function. What are the options?

The built-in Windows 10 magnifier, as of the 2004 update, offers this option.

Just turn the magnifier on and decrease the zoom level, you still have access to the option with everything looking relatively normal, that is, if you didn't want the screen magnified.

Hmmm. I’ll have to try this. I am sighted and I’d like to be able to follow along with the printed words. But I had a feeling this group would probably have the best answers for me. Thanks!

Have you tried Kurtzwile? Researching screen readers for people with learning disabilities may be of use.

Balabolka is a free download. It can read text you highlight and coppy, but also export audio for later listening which is pretty cool.

Programs like "natural Reader" "Text Aloud" and "voice Reader" are also good options.

Have you tried FUSION? It runs for 40 minutes for free then just restart it
