Can opener (self.Blind)
submitted by naive-optimist
Hey everyone, love you community you've established here :)

My grandma is an incredibly independent woman who has late-stage macula degeneration. While she's able to distinguish rough outlines, her vision is very poor (and difficult to specifically determine, mainly because she keeps the full truth close to her chest). Though visually impaired, the way she interacts with everyday life, you'd never know; she does everything from her own shopping to trips across town (by bus). For me, she represents the effort of the Human Spirit and will continue to be an inspiration throughout my life.

I'm messaging here to ask for some help with an everyday task that grandma struggles with; a can opener. There's certain things in life that she can only get from a can, but opening it is very challenging for her with a traditional can opener. She frequently resorts to a knife.... which you can already see can present problems (although it hasn't so far).

Stopping her from doing it is fruitless, but providing her with an alternative would be great. I was wondering if anyone here can think of a solution.

Thanks in advance everyone, wish you all the best :)

Get her an OXO can opener with the big handle. We've had one for 19 years now and it has never failed us. So easy to use. Much safer than a knife!!! I don't see how using this OXO can opener could be harder than using a knife! They are about $20 or so at amazon, but so worth it. Ours has always retained it's smooth and fast ability to open any can.

If by a traditional can opener you mean a bladed one that is pushed into the can, you ought to get her a mechanical one that grips the rim of the can; they're much easier to use and definitely safer than a knife or even the bladed type.

Have you thought about electric can opener? Maxi AIDS has a lot of adaptive equipment for everyday use. Here’s a link to an electric can opener on the maxi aid website: https://www.maxiaids.com/tornado-can-opener
