Well, we're generally fans of not getting hit by cars, and being able to hear them helps with that. Have you researched this?

Love the sounds. Hate the getting hit by cars.

Not getting hit by cars is pretty cool when you think about it so I like the concept

It's necessary and a no-brainer. Plus, make it sound right and you get the sounds of futuristic vehicles.

As an O&M Specialist, I welcome it. Electric cars have been problematic for some of my clients, and I've had a situation where a client and I were next to a Tesla, and talking about it... and it just drove off without a sound. I didn't notice the driver, and even I was surprised by how silent it was.

I actually e-mailed my MP and asked for him to put forward legislation for this very thing a while back.

There's been multiple times now where I've almost been hit by an electric car, and I kind of like being alive, so hearing the things would make me feel safer while I'm out and about.

I think it’s good, we can hear what’s going on.

My grandpa has a hybrid. Provided it starts up without the engine, he can drive away and I wont' notice. In the country, you'll hear the tires on dirt, grass, and gravel. You hear it because it's quiet though. In an urban environment, there's so much other noise around you that you'd be in danger before you heard it. So yes, I think it's a good idea. I wish we didn't have to do it, because why not make things quieter if we could, but yeah.

Some newer gas cars are very quiet as well. I think electric cars need something to let you know they are moving.

Less noise is nice but at the same time, there has to be something there so people can hear the vehicle. Not just blind people but sighted people as well. I was right next to one during guide dog training and I had no idea until I heard tires on gravel. I only happened to hear that because it was fairly quiet around me otherwise. If there had been more ambient noise, I would have had no idea it was driving right next to me.

Since reducing noise pollution is one of the major benefits of electric cars, it is slightly disappointing that this is necessary from a purely singular point of view, but it's absolutely vital for safety not just for VI people like me, but also distracted/hard to see pedestrians and bicyclists, which are more common than ever now with so much smartphone use. Besides, most noise is caused by traffic on main thorofares, where electric vehicles would be traveling fast enough to make their own noise without added audio being necessary anyway.

Not sure if it's the best way, adding more sound pollution seems bad, but there has to be something that lets us know where those things are. Just consider for a moment: what if some cars were allowed to be invisible?
CloudyBeep2 points2y ago
It's not adding noise; it's just restoring noise to the approximate level it was before these vehicles were around.
modulus0 points2y ago
Sure, but it's adding noise compared to not having it. Noise is bad, all else equal. Maybe this is the best that can be done and it's worth it, but it's sort of a pity that cities can't become quieter.
