Most accessible TV (self.Blind)
submitted by appollo2020
hey folks!
I’m currently in the market for a new TV and as we know, the only TVs in the market now are smart TVs. So, I’m trying to figure out the most accessible option I have. I, of course, could hook up an Apple TV or fire stick and be fine. But, I would like to have an accessible TV nonetheless. I think I’ve narrowed it down to LG or TCL as my preferred brands but it seems like LG might be the better option in terms of accessibility.
Does anyone have any pros or cons for these brands or recommendations for other brands? Thanks in advance!

The new Samsung TVs are excellent. I’ve been able to use Netflix, Disney Plus, Amazon Prime, the TV guide etc right from the TV itself, both with the remote and a Bluetooth keyboard.
On my podcast, Mosen At Large, I have recorded a demo of the Samsung TV as well as one of the latest Sony Bravias which runs Android TV and has two screen readers. We definitely prefer the Samsung though. I’ve not used an LG so don’t know how they compare.

I have a Samsung smart tv that's four years old now. I had the speech turned on but it just didn't work that well for me. I have the Apple tv now and that is much better! (Perhaps samsung has improved the speech guide or whatever it's called by this point;I'm not sure.)

I have an LG TV with voice guidance, so I can only comment on that.

It works pretty well for general use, but has some quirks with narrating how to navigate in the program manager/tuner.

Third party apps need to add voice guidance themselves. So, for example, Plex cannot be used with voice guidance. Netflix, Disney+, Amazon work fine. Though Amazon didn't have the audio description tracks available on the webOS app at the end of last year when I had Prime.

Some samsung televisions have a built in screen reader. Works well with over the air channels and tv guide. Only tested in the UK though

TCL and a few other brands do have FireTV software directly built in to some models, and I've heard that Fire is generally better for accessibility than Roku, the other major onboard option.
I'm not sure if that's what you want, and I know that if you get an external device (for instance the Fire TV Cube) you get more functionality, but maybe a comparison of features would help you determine if you're really missing out on anything you actually care about by going with integrated or not.

I have an LG smart TV and love it. I can access the App Store and the majority of apps. I don’t have any complaints about it.

Thanks folks! This is just confirm that I am just going to go with LG and hopefully it works well :-) I don’t like that you can’t stop the speech when it’s speaking and you have to let it finish, but, such is the life of a first world blind person LOL
