My grandmother is in the process of going blind. She's completely lost sight in one eye and loosing it in the other. I've been struggling with how to help her because she won't ask for help and tells me that she doesn't need help when she clearly does. Most of the time she just sits at home listening to the TV. I spent yesterday driving her around town to catch up on errands for basic and necessary things like the grocery store, bank, hardware store.
She also tried to make breakfast and burnt the bacon because she couldn't see it turning black. That scared me both in terms of fire danger and her ability to feed herself. Blind people have been preparing food for themselves for ages, so there are surely ways to adapt but I don't know where to find info on that and even if I found it I don't think she'd have any interest in learning.
Any ideas or suggestions on how to help when she usually won't tell me what she needs help with and to help prepare for the coming total blindness. I mostly feel like I have to wait until she's ready for help and to adapt but I feel like I'm watching her completely shut down and disengage from life.
