Need advice for a play! (self.Blind)
submitted by Candlelight-writer
I'm sighted, but I am currently working on a play that has to do with blind people. For context, my character goes blind in a late 1800s mining accident. I want to use this play as an opportunity to talk about ableism but of course, I need to talk to actual blind people about their experiences first. So I would love to hear what you have to say: How has being blind affected your relationship with others? How difficult is it to adjust to being blind? Do people often try to speak for your disability even though you are right there? Have you ever run into that common trope about blind people being all seeing, wiser, etc. And any other comments you would like to share that might help!

I am still learning about blindness and disability. Please let me know if there's anything you think I'm getting wrong that I should keep in mind while writing, any resources that might be helpful, or just your opinions on whether writing this is even a good idea. I am hoping to talk about ableism because I don't see very much about it in media.

Any thoughts at all will help! Thank you!!

One thing is, the term you’re looking for is “sighted” not “seeing”. Welcome to the in-crowd!

This sub is a huge resource. You’ll get a skewed population toward people who are going blind soon, family and friends of blind people, or blind people who are comfortable enough with technology to use reddit regularly. Not that many folks who for instance are recently blind and haven’t figured out tech or have no intention to.

Just browse some threads with comments for all you need. It’ll be helpful not only to get the emotional aspect but also the general daily concerns.

This. OP should do some more browsing on this sub first then come back with more specific questions.

Thanks for that. I hope by giving an answer to some of these posts that come in with such broad questions that I’m helping clear them out and the community doesn’t have to deal with them so often. I don’t want to step on toes by answering for the Blind community though.

I appreciate that. I think we appreciate any help to address these super wide open posts because a thoughtful answer would take us forever to respond to in the first place. Plus, most of them have answers if peiple would take the time to do a little searching and reading first anyway. Like many others on here, we enjoy educating and sharing but the answers to the really simple questions almost always have largely universal answers that people could find with a little more effort.

I think what everyone else has said is right, although the situation in that period of time would be very different to now and I don't know if anyone can really advise you. I think the you can probably imagine what it'd be like. Basically worse, a lot worse.
