I'm wondering if I can get some tips on how to write a letter to someone who is recently blind and does not know Braille. I have an idea or two but would love to get input from this community. Thank you (self.Blind)

It will make a big difference if they are completely blind or low vision. Some legally blind people can read large text.

If they don’t have any vision or not enough to read, perhaps a gift in the mail would be better, along with a text or email. Maybe you can make it cute by adding perfume, if they’re not allergic.

He is completely blind due to an accident 3 years ago. It's someone I haven't seen in 4 years so I was thinking of writing a letter with puff paint or puffy stickers, so he can read it and not his caretaker. I am also sending him this stuffed owl he bought me ages ago so I know it'll definitely mean a lot to him. Thank you:)

I can’t personally speak to this, but I don’t think it’s necessarily your place to circumvent their assistive services. Not every blind person can read raised text, particularly if it’s not printed by a computer, so without talking to your friend about it first it might cause more problems than it solves.

One cool thing is there’s an app you can use to share video of something, and volunteers will watch it and tell you in speech what it is/what it says. If your friend wants to keep things private from their caretaker, there is a way.

It’s super nice to catch up with friends from years ago and I encourage you to do it! Just saying that email/text or relying on the assistive services they already have might be better, if you aren’t going to get their opinion first.

I actually spoke to his sister and she thinks it's a wonderful idea, I just wanted to get opinions from visually impaired or blind users. No email or text as I don't know if he has access to either and all I was given was his address, so I have been planning on writing something for him. Thanks

Ask your contact for a phone number or email and save yourself some trouble.

What about making an audio recording and sending it to him? That would be pretty awesome in my opinion if someone did that to me! It’s just a thought. Hope it helps!

That's not a bad idea, I might take that into consideration...thank you!!!!!!

One thing my friends have done with me if they didn’t want to write me an email like normal is that they actually wrote me a print letter, and then recorded themselves reading it to me. It was pretty awesome! I really enjoyed it. I’m glad I could help.

Just right the letter like you would, don't complicate things for yourself and your friend.
