Possible scholarships for those on SSI or for college students (self.Blind)
submitted by cupcake6740
Hello all. I am an oboe performance major at uni in America but due to the nature of SSI I can’t save up money to buy an instrument for my profession/ school. I don’t know what to do at this point since I pay $90 a month to rent one and with ssi it’s just awful. I asked my school and they literally said the only option was to take out a federal loan and hope I get approved. Does anyone know of any scholarships or ways I could afford this without possibly losing my benefits? At this point I’m at a loss on what to do. It’s like trying to be a painter but never being allowed to own your own paint brushes. It’s frustrating

I know exactly what u need to do. Research able account. U can save up to $100k, and use the money for qualified disabled expenses. Idk y people don’t talk about able accounts more bc they’re such an important tool for saving as a blind person.

You need to apply for and get started in a vocational rehabilitation case. Since you receive Social Security benefits, it will likely be exempt from any economic need requirements. This could open up the door for locational rehabilitation paying for school altogether, or at least providing you ways to purchase equipment that you may need for a future career and this could include equipment you need for your training. With vocational rehabilitation it’s really about your ability to advocate for yourself and justify why you need some thing to the counselor. I was able to receive my bachelors and Masters degree using vocational rehabilitation, and I live in a fairly conservative state. It’s really something you should consider even if you haven’t had luck before, just keep trying

Try to get in touch with the department of vocational rehabilitation (DVR).

Look up college scholarships for the blind. There are several options available out there. Can’t remember exact ones offhand, but I did this when I was applying for grad school this year. I’m a painter too, so your last sentence made me lol. Don’t take out a federal loan.
