That is cool, but I wish you would have included an example of what you had them fix. Your article doesn't really explain some of the things you found that needed changing. I don't really understand what you were fixing. Was it just making sure the description made sense?

Gotcha! They actually incorporated more than a dozen of my suggestions. Changing some verbs, etc. Taking some description out, and tightening a lot of things like, then, and, now, and adjectives used. It would have taken up a whole section but I will do that next time.

That is really cool. I hope other films get some form of that in the future. I have com across some pretty bad audio description.

Very interesting. I've actually done a lot of narrating and voice acting and have always been curious to try my hand at audio description. It's a big part of my TV and Movie experience, and I actually think I'd be quite good at it. THE only thing holding me back is not knowing how constructing the script would work. I'd be very interested to know how you got started in this.

Generally different people write and voice the audio description script. International Digital Center, whose audio description credits include Russian Doll, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, The Last Dance, October Faction and Outer Banks among others, has started actively recruiting blind voice talents. The audio description companies that require their narrators to come into their studios to record audio description generally require a cold read, which means that you need to be able to read a script with very few errors so that you don't need to do multiple takes.

Blind voice actors narrated the audio description for SkinDecision: Before and After, Ever after High, Sam Jay: 3 in the Morning and seasons 1-3 of F is for Family.

That's very interesting. Thank you. The one thing I'm not all that great at is cold reading. THESE days I'd be very surprised if that's as necessary though? What with Covid and all. I think for something like this it would be a bit easier. As long as I had a script, I could certainly make a go of this sort of thing.

Cold reading isn't strictly necessary right now, though you might still have only a day to record a movie. Would you be able to record a 7000-word audio description script in just a few hours? And I don't think any of the large companies have decided what they'll do when it's safe to return to work, but I think most of them will return to the studio since it's easier to provide direction and they can record files more quickly.

I don't know if I could. But I could certainly see how long such a script might take. It would be a very interesting challenge. I feel I've watched enough audio description and done enough of my own narrating to have a pretty good idea how to make it sound compelling. there's lots of good description out there, but there's also a lot that makes me wonder how good certain studio's quality control actually is. I also really wish they'd start cutting down on the auto ducking a little bit. I understand its value, but lots of studio lower the sound so much for the description to cut through that you mis out on most of the sound, which is just as important.

Did you watch the movie before the audio track was recorded, or did they re-record parts based on your alterations to the script?
rkingett 2 points 2y ago
I did a bit of both. I read the CC file, but also provided feedback after the initial script was written. The Captioning file was easy because I could just read that in Notepad. But they made re recordings based on my feedback both, before, and after.
