Accessibility options for webcomics? (self.Blind)
submitted by HauntedWebcomic
Hello r/Blind,

I just started a webcomic. I have hearing impairments and i know that i judge youtube accounts on the quality of their subtitles--i'm not really able to follow along without them. I feel like it's probably similar with visual impairments? I hand-letter the comic and I'm also aware that that can be even harder to read than typed letters.

I'm looking for a way to include the visual impairment version of subtitles. I've read on a few sites that alt-texts with transcriptions allow screen readers to read the comic, but I'm using $1 and they don't have a feature to allow alt-texts.

Are there any sites that accomodate this? like...somewhere that I can upload the transcripts and link it to the comic in some way? i'm reaching out to you guys so i can find a solution that's actually useful and not just gimmicky.

links to the comic if that helps you with your answers:

So first, thank you so much for considering this at all. Most comics, web or otherwise are completely inaccessible. Honestly, the only text-based solution I've seen for longer works is just linking to a word document for each part. Its not the most elegant solution, but its accessible, and honestly with things like this the bar is so low that its actually helpful. I would hate for you to have to write your work twice, though, that sounds really annoying. You could try some sort of scanning software but usually it doesn't work so well when there are also pictures on the page. What is your webcomic about?

The sort of basic tagline I've been giving it to not give away too much info is that it's about a woman with a mission to show the world that demons aren't inherently evil but just misunderstood!

It's not too much work to provide transcripts as it's being done as a team effort--me writing is and a friend illustrating it--so I've got it all written out already. But even if it was extra work, I think that it's worth it to make it more inclusive?
