I need help learning Braille! (self.Blind)
submitted by DogsB4People
Hi all! I’m new here! I need help learning Braille! I have some resources, but I thought I’d read out here too! Or maybe someone has an idea where I could find a Brailler? I work in the school system and this year I found out I’m paired with a blind student! I found out today and school starts Monday! Any tips or tricks are welcome! Along with maybe ways to help us both out this year! Thank you so much!

Getting a brailler could be costly. Almost $1,300 (Canadian), would probably be similar where you are from. Are you from the US?

Take a look at this for learning braille visually. Do you need to learn braille, though? If things are mostly done digitally, it may just be regular text files.

I am in the US! I’m basically a one on one. So my student is in elementary school. So they are in the process of learning Braille as well. So their work is all in Braille. I will have a printed copy but I will need to be able to type some things out. The school has one but I hoped maybe somewhere near me had one to rent or something to help me be quicker as I learn. I will need to make sure they are typing their words and letters correctly as well! As well as, the regular course work! So the classwork is done in Braille for this student but they are learning everything an elementary school student would. I just have to be able to understand and read Braille so I can help in that aspect as well! I hope I explained that right!

Ah, okay. Our school boards are structured differently, so I'm not sure who you need to talk to about getting a brailler. What state? Hopefully someone else can give you more specific information.

Does the student have a Teacher For The Visually Impaired? That person should be teaching the student braille, and they should help you with transcribing.

So from what I gather. There’s a lady that comes once a week to teach the student, then gives me lesson plans for the week.

It upsets me that it seems there’s more the student needs. I’ll ask a lot of questions when I go in a couple days to start. I don’t want to let the little one down or behind, but if the school is supposed to be giving them more then they need to.

Use www.uebonline.org to learn braille. The student's TVI should be doing the majority of the transcribing though.
