Is anyone willing to share their experience of having a spouse/loved one that lost a lot of their sight later in life? (self.Blind)
submitted by IShouldHaveKnocked
I’m currently dating a man who has low vision who I hope to marry within the next few years. His vision is about 20/400 right now. He has retinal scars due to congenital toxoplasmosis and his doctors say there’s a chance he may lose much more of his vision later on. This isn’t something that seems like a deal breaker to me but of course it’s easy to say that right now when things are fine.

I was hoping someone could share with me what kind of adjustments you had to make and how you managed the change from some or all useful vision to very little or no vision. We don’t anticipate him losing much more vision but it’s a possibility we’d like to be somewhat aware of. Please message me if you’d like if you can share some of your insight (pun intended) and maybe help us figure out how to emotionally or practically prepare for this possibility. Thank you.

He’s only losing his vision, nothing else will change. So he will be the same man you know and love. Just treat him as you always have been treating him. His blindness will never define him as long as he doesn’t allow it too.

I absolutely concur and told him as much. My main concern was his spirit and him allowing the eyesight change to define what he feels he is capable of.

The key thing will be for him to except his blindness. After that I feel it’s all good. I know they are not for everyone, but I am a big advocate of guide dogs. They are a lot of work and there is a cost involved as far as taking care of the dog, feeding, veterinary visits, etc. when I got mine it was a big confidence booster and he has changed my life for the better
