Has anyone ever used voice recognition (as opposed to Speech Synthesis) in order to use a computer? (self.Blind)
submitted by Altie-McAltface
An almost universal notion that sighted people have is that blind people need to use voice recognition (like Dragon or one of the many virtual assistants on phones) to use technology. I don't know anyone who is blind who uses voice recognition. Where did this idea come from? It's really annoying.

Voice recognition is mostly for mitigating motor issues AFAIK.

No no no. Speech recognition always misinterprets what I say. It's incredibly overrated for what it is in my opinion.

No, and I wouldn't either. I've used it on my phone, and it isn't all that great, even when I'm at home alone and it's quiet.

No idea how I'd even go about using voice recognition with a computer. That doesn't seem like it would work at all.

iPhone on the other hand is a different beast, and I love me some Siri!

I never use it, but I think I know why sighted people think we talk to our computers. It stems from the fact that people don't know what a screen reader is. Most sighted people have never even heard of a screen reader, so they think because we can't see the computer screen, we must talk to our computers.

I use it on my phone quite a lot, for making calls and sending quick texts or quick reminders for myself.

I use it quite often in gaming too. I use Voiceattack with a custom profile in games like Star Trek Online and Elite Dangerous.

I theorise a sighted person closed their eyes, tried to type and came up with a string of nonsense, but realised they could speak as usual.
hence all blind people can do the one but not the other.

I type at about 120 WPM, and certainly lack the flow and articulation when I speak. But just my personal stats...

Typing is a whole other can of worms. Everyone under the age of 40 has been taught how to touch type in school. Why is it such a mystery how blind people input information into a computer?

Maybe where you live, but it's definitely not universal. Only a couple of the younger people I know can touch type, the rest are hen peckers.

Interesting. I figured keyboarding replaced penmanship pretty much everywhere. I was taught touch typing by my VI teacher much earlier than the other kids in my school at the insistence of my parents.

Can vouch for this. very few people I’ve ever known are touch typists. I happen to be (mid-30s) I think a lot of folks just always hen pecked but were quick enough at it to get away with it.

Mind you I’m not exactly blazing fast as a typist, I think I average around 60 wpm? Though I feel like my problem is that I get mentally ahead of where my fingers are. That seems to be the great problem I have.
