Any VI people here used the VuFine+? (self.Blind)
submitted by Fr0sty5
Hey all,

I'm interested in creating my own digital bioptic display for use as a low-vision person and was wondering if anyone here had experience with the Vufine+ display ($1) or any similar near-eye head-mounted displays.

My aim is to pair such a display with a camera and something like a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B to do things like help me see if surfaces are dirty when cleaning the house, reading signs that are far away or helping me do things like electronics at home that need magnification.

If I do make anything that is useful I'd like to open-source any hardware designs and software that I come up with so other people can build their own similar setups.

Thanks for any feedback!

I literally had the same idea! I bought the + model and was hoping to find an HDMI micro out - mini camera, wire in voltage to a portable power bank, and walla... but I'm getting sidetrack.(the project is for my former fiance, now just a friend)

Keep me posted!

I know the feeling! I’ve been totally sidetracked with a new job and other stuff.

I did some preliminary testing with the display and PC and unfortunately for me at least I don’t think the current display is up to the task. The resolution is okay but the effective FOV and image size through the display is too small to be comfortable for me.

On a tangential note, I recently purchased a Sony a6400 camera and the OLED viewfinder on it is mind-blowing to be honest. Something like that would make a fantastic base for a digital bioptic telescope so I may end up sourcing a small colour OLED panel at some point and giving that a try.

Nice! Let me know what you find! What about a fisheye lens on the Vufine+ between the glasses? I would do more testing, but Idk if my Vufine+ is broken or something(bought in new condition) because I can't get anything on it even from my pc set to 720p@30fps
