We need to be more vocal and active on question subs like /r/askreddit and /r/nostupidquestions(self.Blind)
submitted by Altie-McAltface
Again and again I see questions on those subs and others about blind people, and invariably all the comments will be people either pulling things out of the air, or presenting info three times removed from the actual source. Usually these answers will be incorrect. Almost never will a blind person chime in, and sadly, when they do, people will often not believe the person is blind.
Sighted people aren't going to come to this sub, we have to go to them. How are we going to get hired if 99% of the sighted population thinks we can't even wipe our own butts? (This question comes up surprisingly often). Subs like /r/nostupidquestions, /r/askreddit, and even /r/showerthoughts are filled with these types of questions.
\*This sub\* has lots of great info for curious sighted people, but almost nobody is going to seek out an actual blind person to answer these questions. Most people on Reddit don't think we can even use a computer, hence why there's a sticky thread addressing the issue on top of our FAQ. As a result, it won't even cross their mind to seek out an actual blind person.
I know not everyone wants to play ambassador all the time, but unless someone is willing to represent us, these misconceptions will continue.

As a blind guy, it is not my job to answer every stupid question. I educate those people I can, but we will never get them all. The internet makes it easy for people to ask questions they would never ask to your face.

you're right, but even just reading this makes me sooooo tired...It feels like trying to fill a 5 gallon bucket with a teaspoon sometimes

I don't mind fielding stuff, it seems like a good idea to put decent information out there, although if I ever become important enough to write an autobiography it's going to be titled "how do you wipe your ass."

The other question that comes up almost as frequently is "who picks up guide dog's poop?" We do more than poop, people!

You know what's interesting is that Molly Burke has covered all of these questions in videos she does!

Ok so I did an Ask Me Anything once on that /r/ama subreddit, and then like 50% of the questions were "so how are you typing how are you reading this" you would figure after I had answered it once people would have understood.

omg, I'd be like, "I think I'm the ONLY ONE reading here!"

I‘m happy to answer questions as soon as I figure out how to use a computer.😂 No seriously I think it‘s important to educate people, I‘m just not going looking around for blindness-related questions.

I was doing the /r/askreddit thing for a while but it got to be too much of the same stuff over and over and over again.

Trying to explain over and over to people who have misconceptions about the blind and visually impaired is very tiring. I just try to explain to the best of my ability and if they still don't believe; then so be it. Its their own fault if they choose to not believe

on /r/askreddit, if it can figure out it is about blind people, the auto-mod actually suggests coming here to ask the question.
I try to answer questions when possible, but there can be a lot of questions there generally. Also, people get very annoying about some of the answers. I answered one question, and the poster then berated me for not knowing what I was talking about.

I'm all for finding these threads and answering, but that's sort of the problem, finding the threads. I don't have time to browse through a bunch of topics until I find one about blindness. I wonder if there's a bot or program that can do that for you.

There's a search bar at the top of the page. You can limit the search to the sub you're on.

I read /r/nostupidquestions for a laugh and chime in on there quite often. But you can't fix stupid, and that's just how the sighted world works. You can educate some of the people some of the time ...
