Do blind people ever turn on the lights? (self.Blind)
submitted by Fabilur
I was just wondering.

My daughter who is completely blind likes turning them off at night when her mum or I are in a room. She then "runs" away giggling about us not being able to see what we are doing when the light is off

I would probably do that too when i was little.

Lol, nice one.

:) actually, if I het home from work in the winter and my daughter's out after school or something I'll turn them on when she's due.
but usually yes: they serve to show the house is occupied - I've had delivery drivers assume I'm not at home before now.

Pain in the ass when we have sighted guests though - I have to do a walkaround because people leave lights on.

Oh I go out and wait for my deliveries.

Okay, so sometimes. :)

No, when my wife is home alone she often forgets to turn lights on for the dogs. Forgetting to turn on lights is pretty common for totally blind people. It's a good habit because if you can't tell when the lights are on you are unlikely to remember to turn them off. We now have some of the house lights automated and they shut off as part of the Google Home "Good night" routine, but that's mostly for the dogs.

As the sighted spouse I am frequently mocked for being "light dependent" though I turn on lights much less than most sighted people.

My wife and a friend once called "$1" to ask someone to read the recipe off of a cake box. The person kind of fumbled and then eventually said in a cute Dutch accent "It is all black". My wife and her friend as well as the BME volunteer all had a huge laugh when they realized that they were making a cake in the dark. Once the lights were on the cake box was successfully read.

Since I don't have a use for my remaining sight I just leave them off. However, blindness is a spectrum, just saying. not all blind people are fully blind.

I occasionally get told off for "wandering around at night with the lights off." Apparently this represents some sort of risk of people assuming nobody is in and trying to rob the place while I'm here.

Depends. I’m assuming you’re talking about totally blind people, but I’ll still give my answer as a legally blind person. I actually keep all lights on, all the time. I actually become totally blind in dim light. The more light the better. But hey, I assume it’s a lot different for totally blind people.

Thanks. :)

I turn them on if people are coming in who probably don't want to walk around a totally dark house, or if I need them for video streaming so people can see me. I don't turn them on and off at set times like when I go to sleep though.

Im loosing my eye sight and at this point I don’t adjust well to lights and no lights.

Well my current apartment layout is horrible and it’s really hard to find the light switch, so I’m a horrible person who keeps her lights on almost all the time. Thankfully my building is mainly green energy, but that still can’t be good ha ha
I always joke it will even out when I’m completely blind.

Not personally, unless I want to forget to turn them off.
Nighthawk321 1 points 2y ago
I typically only turn them on if I'm going to film or need to use my camera to read something.
katchafire99 1 points 2y ago
Im light sensitive so try and keep all lights off or im gonna get a headache
Prefect316 1 points 2y ago
I'm totally blind and if I remember, I'll try and have a light on so people know someone's home. I also try and have a light on at night for my dog. Can dogs see in the dark? Idk...

I use Alexa with smart plugs so I can turn all the lights in the placeoff with one command.

I tend to keep them off. It probably varies though with degree of vision, since not all people considered blind are completely sightless. The exception would be if I expect company.
