Need support and advice. (self.Blind)
submitted by Rb878
I had LASIK surgery that damaged my corneas. I still had ok sight about 20/40 in each eye so I could still work and drive. Then I developed cataracts.
I had cataract surgery in my left eye and developed a detached retina soon after that caused me to lose most of my vision in that eye.

I have a cataract now in my right eye that will eventually have to be removed.
I’m very depressed about the loss of sight in my left eye and scared of losing sight in my right eye.
I’m having trouble coping. Any support and advice would be appreciated.

I really recommend talking to a counselor or therapist about it.I lost most of my vision rapidly over a short period of time earlier this year, and it's helped me. It's still difficult but just being able to talk openly and without consequence to someone and express my frustrations and worries was cathartic. Having family and friends to talk to is great, but sometimes it can come with difficulties.

I was referred to the Phoenix school for blind children (I'm 35m) because they work with adults that lose vision as well. If you haven't already seen a low vision specialist, I HIGHLY recomend it. It really helped me understand what to expect as far as lifestyle changes, and learned about different assistive technologies and devices that can help. The place I went to also has a counselor who works specifically with blind and low vision people. Perhaps you can call around to different schools and organizations near you and inquire about that.

It's understandable to be depressed about losing your vision. Having my independence taken has been one of the most difficult things I have ever had to cope with, especially as a single adult. But you can gain some of that independence back with Orientation and Mobility training.

Feel free to PM me as well, we can chat on here or through email if you'd like. Your not alone, and you can still have a good life without good vision.

I'm sorry you're going through this. I know it's hard. I'm going through something like this, in that it's beyond my control too and I'm losing a battle of sorts. Idk if it will help but i chose to just look at it as my path. I'm not going to let it keep me from being happy. Does that mean I'm never sad or angry, absolutely not. I let myself feel whatever i need to. And you should definitely find a counselor and a support group if not in person online if you can. Get your personal support group together too, I mean friends and family. You don't have to be alone. Talk, write, pray, breathe, and meditate get it out, you need to work through this. That's my advice. This is hard and losing this part of you is a loss you need to grieve. Good luck

Hey there! That’s super rough and I’m sorry you’re going through that.

I have around 20/70 in my good eye and then had a traumatic eye intro my other eye and lost almost all sight but still have a little light reception after surgery. Enough to really throw my vision off and make things more complex. Feel free to pm me if you ever want to chat.
