Hello. I have been in the NVDA list of commands in their website and it said that to read text, I just have to use the arrow keys how Numpad 7 or numpad9. However none of my numpad numbers do anything except type their number. And the arrow keys work only to read things in like a list of links. The only way I see I can read is by hovering the mouse on text. I mean text that isn't links, because for selectable links, I use the tab. Can someone help me? Am I doing something wrong?

Press control home to go to the top of the webpage and arrow down.
Your left and right arrow will read letter by letter and holding the control key and pressing those arrows will read word by word.

That's so strange. I've been able to click control home and go to the top of the webpage, but I wasn't able to read your comment using this method. I'm so sorry, I must be really thick.

Thanks for explaining. Apparently it was already on.
But when I click h, I don't go to headings, or anything. When I refreshed this page, it read lots of links, but I wasn't sure what to do with it. Still not sure what to do do with left and right arrows. I tried watching a video with the basics but they say to click h for headings for example, but that doesn't do anything for me for example. So I don't think it's working properly? I'm not sure what to do.

Try pressing nvda plus space then try pressing h.
If you have whatsapp or skype or facetime, It would be easier to help, what do you think?
Pm me your details if you like.

The num-lock needs to be turmed off. Most people use the cursor keys on the main keyboard, not the numpad.
NVDA has a system called "brows mode" used to navigate webpages, PDF files, emails and, in some cases, other office files like word documents and spreadsheets. When this mode is on the cursor keys navigate through the file, and when it's off, they are sent through to the software you're running.

Ah! Nice. Do you know how I can turn on that mode?
I turned off the num-lock but I don't think it's working. It still didn't read your message using it.

nvda key, usually either insert or capslock depending on your keyboard layout, and the space key toggle between modes.

That's so strange. Perhaps I need to activate that in its settings before? Because that didn't do anything for me.

The arrow keys do read in documents with a caret (editable text etc). There is also a virtual caret when in browse mode, so arrows will work there too.
When not in documents with a caret, you can use the review cursor (numpad seven and nine for lines, four and six for words, one and three for characters), but you will need to disable numlock.

Thank you. I think I have disabled the num lock but clicking on 7 it's not working on the browser or Word? At a point it read one line, but not the next (in Word).
