Try hitting NVDA 2 a few times to make sure your actually in that mode of typing echo. Or restart NVDA and possibly your computer. If on the latest version, wipe your config file. If all else fails, reinstall. I don't know what version of windows your running but you can do fairly well with narrator alone on windows 10 so if that your in luck to do a full reinstall.

Try wiping your config. Go to the run dialog and type %appdata% then go to NVDA and find nvda.ini. Quit out of NVDA and launch narrator, delete the file then switch back to NVDA. It will regenerate and you'll have to set things back the way you like them, but sometimes this is necessary maintenance for it.

Other than that, I've got no clue.

First, check if you're running the latest version and if not update.
If you're already on latest version reinstall. Maybe you should reinstall regardless and come back with the results.
