Yes, this is related to blindness. Read to the end.
First, some background. I have been reading the book *Red Rising*. In the book, a young miner (or “Red”, as they are called in the book) named Darrow must join the ruling class (called “Golds”) and basically destroy their rule. MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD!
The first step to doing this is taking a test of intellectual and physical capabilities. Anyone who scores high enough is put into a Draft, where twelve Houses select their members. Once everyone is in a House, the teens go through the Passage, where >!the stronger members must kill the weaker ones without weapons!<. The survivors then go to the Institute, which is called a school, but is actually an arena. Each House is given tools and weapons and tries to conquer other Houses. Ultimately, one House and its leader wins. Basically, it’s a huge war game.
My question is simply: how would a blind person survive or even win all this? The teens at the Institute are essentially the best of the best. Eventually, they have full armies complete with cavalry and high-tech blades. I imagine this question applies to any disability, but when I was reading it, I specifically thought of blindness. Specifically, I was thinking of the Passage and the occasional duels and sneak attacks. Sorry if this is inappropriate.

Seriously dude, this is stupid. You wouldn’t get chosen, end of story. Why do you think you aren’t allowed to be in the army irl if your blind? War doesn’t accommodate

It’s a valid question. Anyone who scores high enough on the test is eligible for the Draft. That’s what the Passage is for.

With plot armor. Duh.

While I have read that book and I liked it, this might be the stupidest question I have ever seen posted on here.

The same way a person with disabilities would survive in the army, which is to say, he won't.

I would mostly have to rely on a combination of listening for breathing, instincts, and luck. I would have had a lot of training like everyone else, but I think it could be possible.
Awareness of the environment how wide or narrow it is, where the high and low ground on the terrain are would be crucial, I've heard that a lot of fencers like to force their opponents into narrow places, so as long as I could have a day in the institute to prepare I think this would be feasible.

Person coming from r/redrising here!
If you were gold and born blind you would either not get sent to the institute at all, or get carved and get to recover your sight. Hope you enjoy the books! I'm at the 5th book and they're amazing.

Short answer: none of us would survive.
This is why - contrary to many sighted people - I never wish for some sort of post-apocalyptic world to happen in real life. While it seems like fun in series such as *The Walking Dead*, it would actually be complete misery for blind and other disabled folks.
For example if an extremely deadly pandemic broke out, far more dangerous than Covid, one that killed a large part of the human population, my very first worry wouldn't be food or water, it would be my medications. Without my eyedrops, I'm going to suffer horrific pain in a matter of a few days or weeks. I would lose my last bit of eyesight and go completely blind. I would be completely vulnerable and I wouldn't be able to defend my wife either. We live in Europe, so guns are not easily available. If anyone entered our apartment with a big knife or a baseball bat or something like that, I'd be pretty much toast.
Civilization is a blessing for any disabled person.

Get real. You couldn't fight in the army blind so why that? Unless you were daredevil or some shit.
UpsideDownwardSpiral1 points2y ago
It just wouldn't happen, like another person wrote, it's the same thing as joining the army, it simply would not work

^(shhhh, nobody tell him about superabilities)

How would a blind person do most things in fantasy books? They quite simply wouldn't, unless some form of magic was involved. Not going to happen, do not pass go, do not collect £200.
DrillInstructorJan2 points2y ago
I'll take the £200, I could spend it on chocolate.
je971 points2y ago
I'll spend it on beer.
DrillInstructorJan1 points2y ago
I know what you mean, but I've been cutting down on beer this year. Someone told me how much I was drinking around the beginning of last november and how few days I was having without alcohol in them, which is apparently bad.
All I can say is that I've picked a hell of a year to quit drinking.
RJHand2 points2y ago
Yeah man, about the worst I'd say. Lol.
je971 points2y ago
It's not worth it. Beer is good for your health, if it makes you feel good then it is. That's the rule right?

You probably should have posted this in r/redrising. They would be more interested in this sort of fan conversation.
