Grammarly (self.Blind)
submitted by blind_cowboy
Has anyone used the Grammarly plugin for Microsoft Word with JAWS and if so is it accessible?

As of December 2019, no. Not accessible.

I'm not trying to argue but legitimately curious. What is the difference between Grammarly and, say, auto-spell check in Google Docs? As far as I can tell, auto spell check also fixes grammar mistakes in real time.

I hope if it does become screen reader-compliant so I can see what the hype is about.

Haven't used it, but they're advertising all over podcasts. Apparently, it can help with word choice, tone, and other writing things that would be a step or three above the Word grammar checker. This according to their own claims and I have no idea how well it works, screen reader aside.

That’s a good question and since I can’t use it I’m probably not the one who should answer that.

When I complain about my punctuation not being perfect my wife, who is a writer, suggested Grammarly so I decided that if possible I would give it a try.

I used it around a year ago, and it wasn’t accessible. I am curious if anyone knows of a similar program that is accessible.

I don’t think it’s compatible with JAWS but I once downloaded it on my work computer and my writing remarkably improved. Then IT saw something on their end and it got removed.

I’m guessing it functions as a sort of key-logger and suggests changes based on the logs matching common errors. If you’re doing any type of technical writing it didn’t work very well. This was about 5 years ago so things likely have changed since.

Yeah I believe they upload everything you write. Not sure I'm comfy with that. Google already knows more about me than I do.

If it's free, you're the product.

i don't know if its accessible but the fact that this service is free makes me worry a little. how do they make money?

By selling your data. If it's free, you're the product.

There is a premium version which you have to pay for and a free basic version like a lot of apps that are out there.
