Recently diagnosed with NAION (self.Blind)
submitted by ILostMyTalisman
Pardon a bit of ramble as I'm still coming to grips with this.

I was recently diagnosed with NAION, Non-Arteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy. I feel extremely lucky to still have full use of my dominant eye and about 2/3rds of my affected eye. Since Sunday, the day I had my optic nerve stroke, that's the simplest way that they described it to me, I've been trying to get used to the change in my vision. I am at the point of not knowing what I don't know about how this is going to affect the rest of my life.

As simplistic as a question may sound, does anyone have any advice on how to cope with a change like this? Both mentally and perhaps physically. I know medically, there's nothing to be done, but here's to hoping for something right?

I'm lucky, exceedingly I think, that it's an area where my right eye covers for stereo vision, but it's still, as I'm sure you all know, really changing the way I experience the world.

recent vision loss gradually losing all central vision over here. what i’ve learned from a life of loss (both my child and my partner), i’m grieving as it arises but i’m also connected to my peace and joy. i have learned that resisting what is causes unnecessary suffering so i’m working on trying to appreciate what i do have in this moment. this has helped me not drown in the wave. take it if it serves you. best to you on your journey. ☮️

I was just diagnosed with NAION. unfortunately I only have one eye remaining as my left one was shot out when I was 8 yo. This has become very difficult for me to deal with. Do you have any updates on how you are/have been coping?

How are you these days?

Sorry for the slow and late reply, I've not been on Reddit in many months. I'm now over a year into dealing with this and think I'm pretty well adjusted. I don't really have any good advice unfortunately. The best I can tell you is seek all the help you can get from family, friends, doctors and mental health pros. as it is a traumatic event both physically and mentally.

I've not lost any more vision at this point, and still am able to see a full field of vision with both eyes open. I've changed a bit of my routine as I no longer really like to drive at night if I can avoid it at all and headlights seem to cause me discomfort.

As for coping, therapy helped some, but family taking up a little slack and being understanding that I may not always see what they do has helped.

Have you had any improvement?

I was also hit with this last month. It's been an awful ride.

Sorry, same answer I have before. I've not been on Reddit since I updated the last question. I hope all works out for you.

I don’t have this diagnosis but please seek therapy for your mental health and get in touch with your vision impairment services. And get in touch with support groups, Discord servers and us here too if you’re in need of further support.

Thank you. Therapy was already happening. The long story made short is my dad passed and I lost my mind for a while, then this happened on top of that. I'll go search out some discord servers too. Thank you.

Wow, that sounds stressful. I hope you’re doing somewhat okay.

I'm getting by. My wife helps out more than I know, she's really good at redirecting my attitudes and cheering me up as much as she can.
