Any Desktop Client for Reddit? Plus 1 more (self.Blind)
submitted by Psychonaut55
Hello guys,
I'm new to Reddit and sometimes I find the website a bit complicated to use (for instance, I don't even know where to find my notifications such as someone commenting on my posts).
So is there any accessible desktop client for using Reddit?

Plus question: if I have to get used to the web interface, is there somewhere I can learn more about its usage?

Thanks in advance.

You can browse old.reddit.com which is more user-friendly.

Thanks, I'll give it a try :)

Yeah, old.reddit is good, the only issue is that adding flair is quite tricky.

Dystopia with a bluetooth keyboard is the best thing in my opinion.

I'm not sure about screen reader accessibility, but I use browser plugin called Stylus and "Reddit Minimal Dark" style to make Reddit much more bearable to use. At least it looks more cleaner and straightforward, if that indicates anything.

In order to work properly, the styleheet requires user to default to old reddit instead of using the new reddit.

The old reddit is much more comfortable to use in general compared to new Reddit, especially when used in tandem with Dark Reader browser plugin. However, I think old.reddit + Dark Reader is much more laggier than using custom CSS with stylus.

Edit: After thinking about it more, I seriously doubt if installing new stylesheets would do anything for screenreader users. Stylesheets only affect (or at least should) the visual appearance of the website, but I believe screenreaders only really care about the underlying structure of the website. Custom CSS can make websites easier to use for folks who still have some vision left (like myself), but they probably don't do much for screenreader users.

Opting out from new reddit and defaulting to the older reddit design should help the both screenreader and low vision users as well.

Hi,
How can I set Reddit to use this Minimal Dark style, please?
Also, let me see if I got it right. I set Reddit to the Minimal Dark style then download this plugin, is it what you meant?

P.S.: Using Firefox if it makes any difference.

1) First, go to Reddit preferences menu and set reddit default to older design (opt-out or something?). Also, turn off "allow subreddits to show me custom themes" option.

2) Download and install stylus. Stylus is a browser addon which gives users a convienient way to use their own custom CSS styles on different webpages.

- $1.

- $1

The stylus only affects the website's CSS stylesheet, not it's underlying structure (html, scripts, etc.). I doubt if installing custom CSS would actually do anything for screenreader users.

3) After installing stylus, you can now browse custom user styles on $1, which has a big collection of stylesheets for different websites, including Reddit.

$1

4) Install the style and then go to Reddit. The stylesheet should be enabled automatically.

Thanks a lot for the instructions. Gonna give it a try right now!

Well, it indeed hasn't changed any of my screen reader behavior, but it did no harm as well! So I guess it's ok, trying doesn't hurt :)

Anyway, thanks again. I guess I'll stick to the old Reddit interface or, well, just get used to the new one.
