Design student wanting your input (self.Blind)
submitted by curious_designer18
Hi everyone! I'm a product design student who's starting a study to create a home product to assist those who have visual impairments. I'm here to ask for knowledge. Sometimes designers create stuff that sounds cool but suck to use or are designed for all the wrong reasons. What I’m really searching for is the gaps in products that currently exist or the problem areas that occur for people who have visual impairments. I’m also wanting to know what products you use every day that assist you and why they’re great. If you have any thoughts please send them my way! Thank you for your time, and I appreciate your feedback.

This is random af but I just thought about this today - I wish I had a portable laptop/ipad stand that went almost vertical. I made $1 about it a while ago and I only got recommended a monitor arm for desktops, but that’s not really portable is it. And i don’t even own a desktop. So yeah, I’ve always wished I had something to put my laprop or ipad up to my eyes instead of having to bend over to get my nose up to the screen. I don’t know how physically possible that is or if it already exists but damn if this thing was on sale I’d buy like 10. My current solution is putting my shitty stand on a shoebox and laying it against a desk lamp right behind the shoe box.

I think that's a really great area that I haven't thought about. I found $1 iPad stand online for you and hope it may be what you're looking for! I think it might help if it had an adjustable height option though. But I'll definitely pursue more ideas like this, thanks!

I’m taking product design as well! I have created a product for visually impaired people that will help them hopefully speed up their morning routine and make it easier. It is a box (a bit more than just a box but I don’t know how to describe it sorry!) that has compartments for different “parts” of your morning routine. For example everything to do with dental care is on the left and is coloured in blue with a different texture. I’m also experimenting with seeing how I can add Braille labels onto each compartment. I know this is not an opinion but hopefully I can help you!

No worries you’re welcome, I’ve also posted on this subreddit for opinions, if that helps with evidence :)
