Hello everybody! I would just like to ask two quick questions to those of you who are blind or visually impaired for my GCSE project at school.(self.Blind)

Hello everybody! I have no blind or visually impaired friends so I thought that this subreddit would be a very good place to ask! At school I am trying to make a product that has multiple uses for my product design GCSE. I’ve decided that a box (it will be more than just a box) containing all of your morning items I.e. a toothbrush a hairbrush etc. would be a good product to make.
At the moment I am creating my client profile and I need some opinions, I could make these up but getting are real opinion would be much better as it should help me adjust my product as well!
I have two questions if you don’t mind answering, it would be greatly appreciated:
1. Do you find it hard to get ready in the morning with all the different “morning” products available out there today? Is there just too much stuff?
2. How long would you say it takes you to get ready, by ready I mean, dressed with your hair done and teeth brushed!
If you have any more problems or things that you struggle with in your morning routine please feel free to share in the comments. Thank you all very much it really helps! 🙏

1. No. Blind people are very well-organized. Some of us separate our grooming items from those of our family members if they feel the same, but most of us can identify our products very quickly by touch if we don't have enough vision to see them.
2. For most of us, no longer than the average sighted person. Brushing one's teeth should take no less than 2 minutes, and brushing one's hair depends on the hair, not one's blindness.
Identifying clothes can be a bit harder at first, but most people have systems for choosing suitable combinations of clothing like keeping clothes that can be worn together close to each other in the cupboard, or putting braille or audio tags on each garment denoting its color and then just learning which combinations go together.

Thank you very much for your response! I think Mainly my product would be used for putting all your items in the same place so you would know they’re yours and not other family members’ and so it saves time walking around. It does not seem like a very practical product to make for real life situations but I am struggling to think of another product that I could make myself this idea seems like the best at the moment haha.

I resent the implication that I am well organised. I'm just good at remembering combinations of bump dots.

partially sighted,
i don't have a ton of products that I use on a morning, but as only my peripheral vision is affected currently, I can see labels on products and know what they are.
i can get ready fairly quickly on a morning as long as the space i'm getting ready in isn't cluttered (hence i keep my room very tidy now, didn't use to). the only bit that occasionally takes me longer is if I put something down, forget where I put it and then can't find it even if it's in a very obvious place. same goes for if I drop something.

Thank you so much, this will help as evidence towards my final portfolio!

This is a neat idea and could be targeted to the disability community as a whole. I personally kinda struggle with getting the toothpaste on my toothbrush (I get there in the end) for me, unless I don’t have my clothes figured out, it might take me around 15-20 minutes? In my opinion
I think this product can be particularly helpful for those with Autism or ADHD too.

Oh my goodness me thank you so much you make a really good point that I didn’t even think about! I will suggest this to my teacher as now I have a much more broad audience! Thank you!
CosmicBunny972 points2y ago
No worries :) In my opinion, it would be more useful for people with Autism or similar disabilities rather than blind people. Also, that way you address a larger market.

Yes you are right!

I wish you luck :) If you need any ideas, feel free to PM me too.

Answering on behalf of someone I know ...
Visual impairment is very variable. You can get a sense of different conditions with this app: https://www.rnib.org.uk/eyeware
Have you looked at the range of products already available for VI people. Here are a couple of suppliers: - https://shop.rnib.org.uk/ - https://www.cobolt.co.uk/
VI people will tend to have their routines and places in the home they keep things. They have their own shelf on a bathroom cabinet or even their own bathroom cabinet. Other things may be kept on a window sill but always in the same places.
The challenges come when travelling but then a bathroom bag usually takes care of that. Having pockets with zips in the bag helps with finding things and stopping them falling out. It also helps if the bag has a distinct colour and texture to the fabric.

Thank you so much for this, I’m definitely going to look at the websites!

I struggle to see the purposes of a special box. Everything I have or could possibly need is in my bathroom. If I really needed to separate my items from that of my family, I would just use a toiletries bag.
On an average day, it takes 5 minutes tops. Go in, take care of morning business, brush teeth, go out.
I know what clothes I want to wear and I am very well organised.
Thanks for the interest but maybe you should look in some other direction.

Yes I am now starting to think that I should change my product too haha. Thank you very much for your response!

1. I’m not very organised, but I can feel the differences between my products and they always end up in the same area even if they are in a different order. I occasionally stick a tactile label on them
2. Same as above, brush teeth takes 2 minutes and hair takes 10 minutes for me.
Herbal essences have little raised lines and dots on the bottom of they’re products so blind people can tell the difference between their shampoo and conditioner easily, despite the bottles feeling the same - maybe looking into this could help your project.
CaitlinW05 [OP]1 points2y ago
Oooooh thank you that sounds interesting and I will definitely look it up! I think I’m going to change my product as it does not seem very practical. Thank you for your response!
coarsing_batch1 points2y ago
Hey it’s not a bad idea. It’s cool that you thought of it. But I do really like the idea of finding a way to differentiate between shampoo and conditioner. I just get somebody to tell me which bottle is which, then I always put one on the left and one on the right. But what happens when they get messed up? What happens if somebody moves them in with a bunch of other bottles? Maybe put a bit more consideration into that idea? But there was nothing wrong with your original one at all.

I just went in for my first day back of school today, thank goodness for that it’s been such a long time, and I showed my teacher your suggestion and he thought that it was a good idea so I’m going to use it thank you so much!

That’s awesome! I’m glad I could be helpful. Although I think someone else suggested it first. But that’s all right. Let us know how it goes.
