We are looking for input for a project from visually impaired/blind people (self.Blind)
submitted by pilinsky
Dear All,

We are a university research team and our task is to design a device that helps visually impaired/blind people in the Covid-19 pandemic. Our primary assignment was to create a device that helps blind people keep the 1,5 meters distance from others but first we wanted to research whether this is a real necessity/issue. Do you recognise this as issue or are there other aspects of the pandemic that you struggle more with? How do you approach social distancing as a visually impaired/blind person?

It’s a real damn issue personally because I don’t look like anything’s wrong with me and I usually don’t use a cane indoors or in crowded places (like in the grocery store - my nemesis) so I literally just look like an idiot from the outside. So that is an actual issue to me. I’ve got to point out that a lot of people can fix it by using a cane and extending it or just using it as a signal to say "I can’t see you, the 1,5m of distance is YOUR problem now". I just can’t fix it like that myself because I’m a genius and forgot my cane at my parents’ house when I moved back independantly once lockdown was over and I won’t be doing the 3 hours commute there until uni starts again.

Can your parents mail your cane?

Nah the french postal services are way too unreliable so we just won’t bother, it’d get lost for sure. I can survive without it until uni starts again so it’s fine!

I agree. The cane is pretty much the simplest solution to this particular problem.

I am new to the blind community (at the age of 41) I am still learning to navigate with a visual impairment- I do have some sight but it is worse than 20/400. What is hard for me is all the stores have different signage and ways of handling the pandemic rules. Some have you go through a different path to enter the store or check out- some have navigational paths through the store and the list goes on. I try to do most of my shopping with a sighted person or online if I can just to avoid all of the things I cannot see in order to comply. Not sure if this helps but it is my struggle
