Hi blind music teachers how’s it going? (self.Blind)
submitted by coarsing_batch
Hey ALL. Hope everyone is having a good Thursday. I’m just looking into getting into guitar or voice teaching. I used to do music in a lot of group homes and Day programs and the like, but all of those places aren’t running any more, and they are not allowed to really gather in big groups in the homes at all. So I need a new strategy for work, and I think that might be teaching now. So I want to talk to blind people that are guitar your voice teachers during this time. Do any of you guys teach on zoom? How does that work for you? if you aren’t teaching someone in person, how do you ensure their hands are in the right position? Their fingers on the right frets? I have a degree in music, but I never specialize in teaching, so I’m not quite sure what blind people do to make it work for them.Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I am really excited about the prospect of teaching. I just don’t quite know how to go about it yet as a blind person. I know it’s doable though, I just need some tips and strategies. Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you all soon.

I have very informally taught some guitar but it's a real pain not being able to see what they're doing. One of the people I did it with is also blind so she can't see what I'm doing and I can't see what she's doing, which was... interesting.

It's just a case of talking it through, counting frets, and making it work. If you find an accessible tuner please tell me.

There are loads of accessible tuners. I have an app on my iPhone called TE Tuner. But you can also get one called talking tuner that is free. They both should work. You just open your iPhone and it uses the microphone and you will play and it will tell you how far off you are. Or it can get you a tone generator, and then you tune to the tone that it is generating.

Yeah, I'm probably the world's only blind android user.

Actually you are not. Let me see what I can find out, because I have a few pals that use android. Maybe they will know more than me. I will get back to you when I know more.
