I am an aspiring fashion student and was really curious to understand the shopping habits of blind people. How do you decide your style, do you get to have a say in how you want to express yourselves? What would be things that you wished brands and designers took into consideration in making it more accessible for everyone?

I have full field, color, and contrast vision, but lower acuity. I have never had an issue with style or shopping, but I do touch things a lot to help inform me about what I am looking at. Also, I would recommend you check out Molly Burke's YouTube channel. She is almost completely blind, but is really int o makeup and fashion--she talks a lot about it on her channel. She seems to just do her homework when it comes to fashion and knows what looks good on her based on her body.

I will look into her, thank you! I think I saw her room makeover on Mr. Kate's channel. She talked about the importance of plushies and so had an entire wall made out of it.

Yes, that's her! And she has in-person and online shopping videos (where she talks about accessibility), makeup demos, tours of the apartments she's lived in, and she talks about liking glitter and shiny things because she can still see the light that reflects off of those objects. She also did videos with James Charles, and she knows tons of makeup products by touch!

So I always have to have assistance going shopping for new clothes. I like to take things as casual as possible, but I have a few nicer dress shirts and dress pants and one tie (because I don't go out much).
I have an equal number of khakis and jeans, an equal number of short sleeved button down shirts and longer sleeved shirts. I have around 6 sweaters and 6 t-shirts.
I call my sister my fashion consultant, and constantly asking people to "be a mirror'

“Do you get to have a say in how you express yourselves”
No, we just lie on the ground like a potato and wait for the sighted folk to come and tell us how we will express ourselves for the day.
Anyway, like the other comments said, I wish that online shopping was more accessible. Brands never include descriptions of images. I either use a sighted friend for online shopping or I go a lot off of reviews and what other information I can get about the product. Just like sighted people, some blind people care a lot about fashion and some really don’t give a damn. I think style is an outcome of a persons personality, not there ability to see.

Was that sarcasm ?
If yes, I am sorry I did not mean to come off as ignorant.
I like that you feel style transcends mere appearance, and I agree. However, fashion is a language we inevitably speak or it speaks through us, maybe it is somewhat of a redundancy in sighted people, who will tend to make a character assessment based on what they see, subconsciously

Yes, it was sarcasm because yes, the phrasing in your post came across as ignorant. No problem though! I am sure you didn’t mean anything by it - hence my making a joke of it.
Yeah, fashion is a language we all inevitably speak - or it speaks through us. It’s a language that doesn’t require sight for comprehension was my point though. Those with and without sight may go about speaking it differently but I think we all inevitably speak it. I don’t think sight creates a redundancy. Rather, I think site just creates a different method of experiencing fashion. However, in that method, there may be flaws such as those that you pointed out - the subconscious character assessments of others. Interesting stuff to think about :)

Most companies sell there products using visuals. They hardly ever include useful descriptions. I read reviews, and I'll judge according to the comments.

I'm not totally blind but when I go clothes shopping I always go with my friends and they help me pick a fit. I have my own aesthetic for sure and online shopping helped out a lot because then I could zoom in or see how it looked on other people in Inspo albums. I think the best thing is having people your age help you experiment is the best thing. There's a lot of rich textures with different styles that a lot of blind people just need to be exposed to.
