What are some alternatives to playing a game like World of Warcraft or Elder Scrolls Online if someone is blind and/or deaf, could a game like Dungeons and Dragons work or maybe reading a book? (self.Blind)

Maybe a text based MUD? It’s old school but a lot of people still play them. Try r/MUD

What's Mud mean?

It stands for Multi User Dungeon, it's basically a text-based MMO. They're similar gameplay-wise to the old Infocom text adventures (like Zork, Enchanter, etc.)

fun fact: MMORPGs used to be called "graphical MUDs"

I would suggest the audio game A Hero's Call (from Out of Site Games available for PC.)
That should give you a taste of the mainstream RPG experience, though it's nothing near the real thing unfortunately, regardless of how well done it is.

The Vale, Shadow of the Crown (From FallingSquirrel Games) ( is another one that isn't out yet but will be probably by the first quarter of 2021.

We also have Untold RPG (from "Gotterdammerung" on the Apple App Store) a text based game with sounds and music.

And there are a couple of games for Amazon Alexa that may interest you, including:

Starfinder (by Payzo inc) an incredibly immersive turn based Sci-Fi themed RPG based on the tabletop game of the same name.

The Dark Citadel (by LC Publishing) a text based game with sounds and music.

MUDS I would suggest are:

Alter Aeon (which has an extensive soundpack available and has everything from quests to crafting to group combat zones)

Frandum (a mainly exploration and quest based game with more complex puzzles)

Avalon RPG (a roleplay heavy and massive world with tons of lore)

erion (an expansive fantasy themed game, mostly hack and slash but with allot of customizability)

Classic six dragons (a good VS evil themed fantasy game with tons of crafting, quests, and exploration)

Aardwolf (a mud with tons of races and classes, lots of interesting quests and contests, fast progress, and a much larger playerbase than most)

We've got some browser RPGs too, like:

Kingdom of Loathing (a well known and extensive fantasy game with humor elements)

Sryth the age of Igtheon (a mainly single player and narrative based game with over 11000 pages of content)

Eamon Remastered (A series of widely varied single player RPGs in different settings, all tied together under the Emon umbrella)

There are undoubtedly ones I missed, so I would suggest signing up for the audiogames.net forum, getting an account on Applevis.com if you've got an Apple device, or signing up for the blind gamers list on groups.io.

Try a $1. If you're familiar with text adventure games, MUDs are basically multiplayer versions of that with RPG elements.

Check out knightsofthebraille.com. Accessible Dungeons & dragons.

Tabletop role playing games can be very accessible. The map and tokens are very optional. The scenes can always be described by voice.

Dungeon and dragons can be very tactical. But it is just one system. There are many.

There are games that almost never use anything visual. Take for instance vampire the masquerade or mage ascension. These are games that only rely on conversation.

All you need is to be able to roll dice.

Ah well, you would have to get a PDF copy of the rule books and make a custom character sheet. But any game master could do it.
The help you would need would be about the same as a sighted person would.

I think Dungeons and dragons would be perfect if you can play with a group of people.

I assume this could be done online through text, but doing it in person would likely be more fun. When I was a teen a group of friends got into it- and there was a cool tactile component to it- Rolling different sided/shaped die of different materials, figurines, maybe even textile maps.

I have played DnD and many other TTRPGs over Skype and Teamtalk for years now and I am totally blind. It is great.

Ooh what other tabletop RPGs? How do you go about character sheets and the books and whatnot?
blindbat84 2 points 2y ago
Let's see...
Slasher Flick, Mutants and Masterminds, Numenera Discovery and Numenera destinny, DnD 3.5, Pathfinder 1.0, Blue Rose, Dungeon World, Feng Shui, and I am sure there are more but I can't recall them all.

The books are all PDF and while some had some problems at points, as a group we worked through. One group has a sigheted member who can help if needed but usually not. The more annoying PDF I found was Blue Rose due to double column format and All Flesh Must Be Eaten because it had one spot in the vehicles section messed up. Not enough to hamper though.

Quest RPG is a game I'm looking at, it has a SR friendly PDF made specific to screenreader users and it is great.

Oh also have played a solo RPG called Quill that is fun, Laser Kittens and Crypts and Critters. I o'wn a handful more that I can't speak to use yet but hopefully.

There are so many great games out there. Dungeom World has an SRD, Standard Reference doucument online that has all you need to play, just google Dungeon World SRD, I can put the link here later for anyone interested:

Hope this helps!

Does your character have a bat?
blindbat84 1 points 2y ago
No.

I do favor the druid, though and have had a tiger and wolf animal companions before.

Currently playing Dungeon World in one group, Feng Shui in another and about to move to All Flesh Must Be Eaten in the FS group.
