Any apps for low vision android users? (self.Blind)
submitted by [deleted]
My father has had diabetic retinopathy for years and has always had a hard time using a smartphone because of the small font and app size. An app called Claria zoom helped a lot but has since been taken off the market. Anyone know of an app like claria zoom or something similar that helps magnify the font and makes it easier to access contacts for phone calls and such? Also has anyone tried the grand pad?

Android has a built in magnifier where tapping the screen 3 times with a single finger will zoom into the screen. If you hold your finger down on the 3rd tap and move your finger around the screen it will be zoomed into that particular section of the screen. Letting go will go back to normal. The option should be in accessibility settings under visual enhancements.

There is also select to speak which can be downloaded from the Google Play Store called android accessibility suite. Select to speak let's you listen any text selected on the screen. What's great about it is that it will only read the text you have selected and nothing more.

These are the two functions I use on my Samsung phone which work great for me.

You can also adjust the overall font size of the phone in accessibility settings as well as using contrast modes. Play around with the settings and see what he likes.

Hope this helps.

If the largest native font is still too small, I can recommend "Big Font." It's an app that essentially overrides the phone's font settings and says "No, keep going, it needs to be bigger than that." I have my font size set for 200%. In combination with the triple-tap magnification option that u/poochbrah mentioned, it works great for me. It also has a function that lets you use your phone as a CCTV magnifier.
