An app called Be My Eyes (self.Blind)
submitted by CantStopTripping
I recently found this app called "Be My Eyes - see the world together" I am a volunteer for it. I get a call and its a video chat and we can help pick out different colored shirts or help guide them through a new space for example.

I want to go out and scream it to the world that this app is out here. There are only 245,855 visually impaired folks on the app and 4,190,813 volunteers i know there are way more than that that are visually impaired. I wish I could find a way to notify the visually impaired about it. It is in the apple app store and the Google play app store. Im not sure if there are any other platforms.

So if you know someone, please tell them that this exists!!!! It could make life so much easier for someone!

Thank you!!!

Wait there is that many volunteers? Never mind, going to download it now! I was saving it for those who are severely impaired/fully blind vs my low vision. But if there is that many volunteers, then I may need to take advantage of it.
minttulisa 12 points 2y ago
Ive had it for 2 years (i think) and every time they do a community announcement (which also gives a notification) I get SUPER excited & then disappointed that its just a community announcement. So many people wanna help out :):). There’s even a language option so it can be used internationally!
Real_Space_Captain 5 points 2y ago
That is sweet! Seriously thanks! I usually just text my friends to help me with things like colors, finding things I dropped, or checking for small details, but it is great to know there is a whole app of people waiting to help so I don't have to wait and annoy the same people over and over.

It’s a great app.
CantStopTripping [OP] 1 points 2y ago
I can send you my number so you can call or what not if you want? I'd love to help. Plus I love new friends haha.
tasareinspace 7 points 2y ago
For a lot of resources people dont feel "entitled" to use or "disabled enough" to use, there is plenty to go around. I have some friends with mobility impairments who dont like using their accessible parking placard because... someone else might need it? So they will walk by 4 empty parking spots that are there for them on the way in, and maybe 3 empty parking spots that are they for them on the way out. If you have access to something and it would make your life easier, it's probably there for you.

This!!!!!

I'm a person with sight and I've noticed a lot of other people online with sight talk about this app and they are very excited to help! I had it downloaded for a while but nobody called and asked for my help!
CloudyBeep 2 points 2y ago
Open the app regularly so that it knows you're still there and interested.
CantStopTripping [OP] 1 points 2y ago
It can stake a really long time because of how many volunteers there are.
harkatmuld 5 points 2y ago
Yep, it gives you the numbers when you open the app. Definitely join if it would be helpful! I have had it for three months as a volunteer and it hasn't even buzzed me once yet.
Real_Space_Captain 3 points 2y ago
Just joined! It will be helpful when it comes to colors or checking small details on things. I'm excited to give it a try :)
CantStopTripping [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Hopefully it works put!! Let us know!!
CloudyBeep 3 points 2y ago
Open the app regularly so it knows you're still there and interested.
PupForge 4 points 2y ago
I get a call every few months. And the app sends the call out to multiple volunteers at a time so if you can’t answer you know someone else will get it. Plenty of help to go around.
CantStopTripping [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Those were real time numbers!! I really hope it helps!! If you ever can't get ahold of someone on there, let me know and we will connect so you can call me whenever you need or want !! Im always down for more friends!!
Real_Space_Captain 2 points 2y ago
Thanks! Just downloaded, so I'm excited to give it a go!

Thanks for volunteering, means a lot to see people more than willing to help :)
CantStopTripping [OP] 1 points 2y ago
It takes a village!! I know that phrase is commonly used for raising children, but when we think of children, we often forget about ourselves. Connections with other people are necessary in all walks of life!.
SecTrono 9 points 2y ago
i think the conversation in this threat is very telling. on the one side we have so many people just dying to help people with small everyday tasks. it really brings home the idea that blind people should feel good about asking for help.

-

on the other side of it. we have all these blind people who don't want to ask for help. i am sure there are a bunch of reasons for not wanting to use the app. its just interesting to see both sides of the situation.
CantStopTripping [OP] 2 points 2y ago
I was thinking about this earlier!!
gumbygirly 6 points 2y ago
I’m a volunteer on the app (I lurk here because I work in digital accessibility) and I so fucking nuts with excitement when I get a call! It’s very rare, but always a great feeling. I used to be a high school math teacher and I got to answer a call during class once and share the experience with my students who all wanted to volunteer too!
Alaisha 5 points 2y ago
The reason many aren't on it is because there is another app with trained people helping to describe things for the blind.
CantStopTripping [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Thats awesome!!!!
Superfreq2 5 points 2y ago
This is a cool idea with a middling execution.
There is no test to make sure that only decent volunteers can get in, so do to the massive number of volunteers I often get very inexperienced people who are bad at communicating.
I definitely appreciate people signing up to help, but Be my eyes is just, not very good in my experience.
Also, the panning/zooming controls on the assistant's end aren't very useful from what I've been told, and calls can often drop before being answered multiple times, likely because the call was rejected.

Also, becoming overly reliant on services like this and letting your blindness skills atrophy as a result is a real risk if you aren't careful. After all, you aren't always going to have a phone, an internet connection, or enough battery power, nor will this app stay around for ever. I'd never rely on it for anything potentially dangerous, like crossing a street or reading the number off a new credit card either.

I do like the product help though, I've used the Microsoft one to install older versions of Windows, though whether or not you get someone who knows anything about how to assist blind people is sorta hit and miss, especially if you call at night...
achromatic_03 1 points 2y ago
Do they have a rating system--like after the call, can you give feedback on ho the volunteer did?
CantStopTripping [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Honestly I don't know!! I would love to know this!
CantStopTripping [OP] 1 points 2y ago
I had never thought of it that way!
Superfreq2 2 points 2y ago
Yeah I don't like bursting your bubble, because I really do appreciate the thought, but at the same time, I've had no luck convincing the people who run the service to put in a basic test/tutorial you need to pass through before becoming a volunteer. IMO they should just purge all existing non VI accounts and start over with some reasonable gatekeeping in place. That way, it'll be more likely for people to actually get a call too!
CantStopTripping [OP] 2 points 2y ago
And you didn't burst my bubble!! You educated me and I appreciate it :D
CantStopTripping [OP] 2 points 2y ago
I have to agree. Like I said I've never thought about that. Im going to look into the blind school here and see if they have any classes or suggestions for me to learn more, so I can be better equipped!
macadamia_owl 5 points 2y ago
It will be available to use with EnvisionGlasses which will be even better because it will be hands-free.
bradley22 1 points 2y ago
It will, but those glasses will be expensive.
CantStopTripping [OP] 1 points 2y ago
I didn't know that!! That is so cool!
noaimpara 2 points 2y ago
I never knew there was this many people on the app! Might just use it to have someone help me figure out the damn microwave that came with my appartement, it’s a nightmare with so many buttons.
CantStopTripping [OP] 1 points 2y ago
If you can't get ahold of anyone or the app doesn't work for you, I'm happy to help! Just let me know!
noaimpara 2 points 2y ago
Thank you very much!
CantStopTripping [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Any time!!
CantStopTripping [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Im so glad you know about the app now!
bradley22 2 points 2y ago
Edit: turns out the app is more useful than I thought. I just read a VI person is going to download the app and hope they enjoy it.

I’m blind.

This app is useful but I hardly use it. In fact; I think I’ve only used it 3 times.

There’s apps for reading your documents and products so this app isn’t as needed as you may think.
Autumnwood 2 points 2y ago
I got two calls via this app. Then not anymore. It was so very long. I deleted it because I didn't feel helpful! Plus I guess you now get a higher chance to get a call.👍
fastenedbrick25 2 points 2y ago
I feel like an ass because I never know what to say after I accomplish whatever task I needed help with. I usually say, "Thank you so much! I hope you have a great day!" and end the call.
CantStopTripping [OP] 2 points 2y ago
That would be more than enough for me!! Even just a "all good here!" Don't feel like an ass. They're there because they want to be!
CloudyBeep 2 points 2y ago
I know some people who have a conversation with the helpers, but if you and they don't have the time or you feel awkward, don't worry about it.
Superfreq2 2 points 2y ago
That sounds like more than enough, most of us say that kind of thing. It makes them feel good for helping, which is the goal, so not sure what else you could say really...
coarsing_batch 3 points 2y ago
I always ask my volunteers name, and how they found out about Be My Eyes. They seem to appreciate that.
23lewlew 2 points 2y ago
I had the app for 5 years and never received a call 😭😭
CloudyBeep 2 points 2y ago
Open the app regularly so that they know you're still available.
CantStopTripping [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Its because there's not many people on the app that need the help. I dont think its being advertised well maybe?
fizzjucker69 2 points 2y ago
Just downloaded this to be a volunteer :)
CantStopTripping [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Welcome to the app!!!
BenandGracie 2 points 2y ago
As a blind guy, I haven't had reason to use the app yet, but I have it on my phone just in case.
c1015 2 points 2y ago
I’ve been registered since 2018 and have received 3 calls, but have only answered in time for one.

I’ve always asked how do they market this to more visually impaired people!!! Such a great app!
CantStopTripping [OP] 1 points 2y ago
There is a blind school here in my town and I keep trying to find a way to go down there and give this to their students!! It would help tremendously i think
CloudyBeep 2 points 2y ago
Kids probably wouldn't benefit from this app unless they need help when they're home alone.
CantStopTripping [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Yes!! How should I advertise it? Its important to me that people can get the help they need
CloudyBeep 1 points 2y ago
I'm not sure.
bjayernaeiy 2 points 2y ago
Yep, as a blind person, it's an awesome app.
CantStopTripping [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Were you able to rate your volunteers?
CantStopTripping [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Im so happy you've been able to use it and its helpped!!
