Smartglasses Experiences (self.Blind)
submitted by wnolan1992
Hi,

Lately, I've been thinking a pair of smartglasses might help me. I'm looking for a pair of glasses to help me read physical books (standard reading glasses and my prescription lenses don't allow this, I'm restricted to using a handheld magnifier or an old pair of glasses that's basically a magnifying glass on one eye that I got about 18 years ago).

I'm curious as to whether anyone in the community has experience with smartglasses? I'm specifically looking for a pair that has a magnification function.

In my experience they are still not a fully baked technology. Have you checked out a portable cctv. Those have gotten rather pocketable

I have a few different options for reading physical items when I'm at a desk or sitting up. I guess what I'm specifically looking for is a hands free option so I can relax and read in bed, or something that means I'm not constantly moving a magnifier back and forth over the text.

Have you tried an ereader like a kindle or kobo. Yes the book is digital but you can set the font to however big you need. I love mine.

Yeah, I have the Fire tablet, which is great. That's where I read any new book I'm interested in.

But I've always loved physical books, and the e-reader just doesn't quite cut it all the time. Plus, I enjoy going to charity shops and I'd really like to find an option that would make it easier to read the vast number of books I could get at a way lower cost than buying them digitally.

Thats fair. The only glasses I’ve tried are eSight 3 and to be honest they made things worse not better for me.

As aextreme budget solution you can use your phone and any cheap VR Google's with bluetooth remote and anapp asthis ones

$1

it has high magnifications, some popular colour schemes and color enchantment, two and one one eye mode. Final result depends on your phone camera I recommend for such one with real stabilisation called optical image stabilisation in short OIS so image stable and not shaking. App is free.

If you're looking for something independent from your phone check out $1 YT channel he shows often VR devices and glasses.

Thank you so much for this. I'd never even considered that VR headset idea as an option, but given the relative affordability of the hardware, I think I'm absolutely going to give it a try. Having the option to invert the colours (either in-app or just on the phone itself) was something I was also looking for but figured I'd just focus on magnification first.

Many thanks again!
