Please report this Facebook photo inciting prejudice against people with visual impairments(self.Blind)
submitted by Andy12131
Please report this photo. Facebook are refusing to take accountability for hate speech directed towards people with visual impairments. I have reported it multiple times to no avail.
Photo description: It is a photo of a black woman holding a cane and using a phone. The caption is “Do you see what I see ? When you see it. Say I got it. Don't give it away. lol.” The implication is that you can’t use a phone and be blind, therefore the woman is faking in order to receive some kind of benefit.
Update: Photo is now unavailable, so Facebook may have removed it.

I say let them come. I refuse to reduce my quality of life because some mouth-breathing wannabe social-media huffing Clouseau thinks he solved some great mystery by catching me looking at something. I don't have total vision loss, but they most certainly have total intelligence loss. Plus, 99% of those people would not have the courage to say anything anyway. If they did, I would lay out what my condition was and tell them to shut the hell up, a state they should have been in in the first place.
I do get this in video games sometimes when I inform them that I am a blind player via macro at the beginning of a dungeon or raid. My job is not to convince them that I am telling the truth. My job is to live my best life and they are not going to stop me from doing so with their petty smallness.
Never, EVER let lesser people drag you down.

Sorry to hear that people’s ill informed assumptions prevent you from using your cane. Nobody should feel so scared as to change their behaviour.

Bro, you hit the nail on the head, great comment
Fange_Strellow6 points2y ago
It is actually worse than you think because the real grievance being displayed here is the racist idea that Black people abuse the social welfare system and are undeserving of empathy. The intersection of racism and ableism runs deep and long and very pervasive in American culture
nkdeck071 points2y ago
Yeah I couldn't figure out to report this under racist or ableist hate speech.
Andy12131 [OP]1 points2y ago
I know and agree. Dog whistle racism
Andy12131 [OP]5 points2y ago
I keep reporting this image and Facebook says it doesn’t go against community standards. It’s extremely frustrating

Further to what someone said below, caption would'a helped!
But yeah I get it. For what it's worth, I'm about as blind as it's possible to be, and I get this sort of crap occasionally, because I lost it fairly late and my body language is, for want of a better word, normal. I'm not weird enough to be considered blind. You don't have to be looking at a phone and it's not just partially sighted people.

Thanks for the feedback. I have now added a description to the original post.
I am not blind, but I have a physical disability. People are very quick to make assumptions

I’ve been having vision issues for about 4 months now and I’m kinda terrified of this stuff. I tell people and they think I’m lying because I can use a phone (with all text make massive and the phone about 15cm from my face)

Both links are broken so hopefully FB took it down.

Appears to have gone. Good work everyone

RNIB in the UK actually did some campaigns around this issue, after this circulated a while ago.
I'm low vision but use a guide cane due to depth perception, night blindness and peripheral vision issues. I'm always trying to use my phone discreetly if I have my cane out. It's ridiculous I should have to do that but I'm scared of abuse or a physical altercation.

Ugh. Reported.

Oh man, this has been making the rounds on Facebook for YEARS and it drives me bonkers every time. Reporting.
je971 points2y ago
What is the photo? I'm not reporting something I can't see, for all I know you don't like the poster and you want to get her banned.

Thank you! Reported. That is absolutely disgusting and the comments make me sick.
Andy12131 [OP]3 points2y ago
The comments are really troubling. The photo is inciting these kind of comments deliberately, therefore the photo is hate speech in my opinion.
Drop9Reddit1 points2y ago
Agreed
ryan516-8 points2y ago
Lol, get a thicker skin. There are actual accessibility issues we deal with, this ain’t it chief
Andy12131 [OP]1 points2y ago
I agree, this appears minor until we look at the broader impact on “accessibility issues”
jage90 points2y ago
Normally I'd agree, but it takes about 5 seconds to report.
