(Serious) A few questions to blind-from-birth people Im very interested in knowing(self.Blind)

How do you imagine colors? Are thay even important to your life? How do you know what to wear everyday? What difficulties are there to you that differ you from people who lost their eyesight during their life?

I choose not to imagine colours, because I haven't heard many good descriptions of colors. Color descriptions I normally heard were: the grass is green, the sky is blue and my typical response would be: yes, I know, I went to the same kindergarten you did.
As to matching clothes I have a system of where all my clothes go, and I have lengths of pin where shorter is lighter and longer is darker.

I don’t care about colour, I know about them but that’s about it.

colour is entirely a learned thing to me. I have to make a deliberate effort to recall the colour of my own hair, eyes etc. It just doesn't impact anything day-to-day.
In terms of clothes, I have sighted advice to look reasonable for work. Black goes with most things for lounging around and being social. Colour is probably the least significant aspect of sight for me: lighting comes up quite often, as does needing to read things of course As a a white child, I struggled to get the concept of race and skin colour. It took a while to expand from the black and white of chessmen to learning that it's not really like that in the world.

Yes I thought about that a while ago Thanks for answering my questions Just trying to get a bigger perspective :)

I feel like I'm answering very poorly. It's hard to explain a lack of something I spose.

No no you’re doing great you answered exactly what I wanted to know

Oh so like you know about colors but that doesn’t really affect you? How do you imagine them? What are stuff you’ve imagined that are different than people who can see?
retrolental_morose3 points2y ago
I don't imagine them at all really. How do you imagine infrared light, or the sound of a dog whistle? You know they exist - they're just outside what you can sense. :)

But Have you been in a situation where you’ve imagined something and thought a certain way of it and found out it was different then you thought?
retrolental_morose2 points2y ago
People told me red was a hot colour for example, but that never really meant anything to me. I also find it strange having a striped shirt for example but the fabric might just be one colour - understanding how the stripes look different if they're the same I have no real analogue in life to link colour to. It doesn't always match texture or anything, it's a purely visual

Oh got it

What do you think of when you think of rain? Like, do you picture rain falling on you, the noise, the smell?
retrolental_morose2 points2y ago
Sure: the feel, sound and smell all play a part. Never thought about it visually ...
