HeMakesMePlay: A youtube channel where I make seeing people play video games for me (self.Blind)
submitted by mostlymarius
Hello everyone,

I've been blind now for some years, and pretty much unable to play video games. However, I never quite lost touch with the passion of my distant youth. So, recently, some of my friends and I decided to start a youtube channel where we play games together and record it.

I thought I'd share this here, as there is quite a lot more description than in other Let's Play style channels and other blind and VI folks might enjoy that, just as I do.

We try to play games that can be easily described or have good audio design. We started out with Disco Elysium. It's a very story focused game and so it works well for our setup. My friend Vincent just has to read a small novel worth of dialogue each time, but he's great at it.

Recently we started playing Baba is You, which is a puzzle game with a twist. This worked surprisingly well. Probably because my friend Rene has a background in linguistics.

You can find it here:

I would also be very interested to hear if people on this sub have any requests or recommendations for games to play in this format. I can't make any promises though. The title is a joke and I don't actually make anyone do anything. Honestly.

This is awesome! Can I suggest “The Last of us 2”, it’s a big game for PS4 but it’s the only game I know of that has so many accessibility options even a fully blind person could play it.

Yes, definitely worth checking out. I really enjoyed playing it and anyone can enjoy the story.

Actually, I think OP should have a friend play the original game and then play the sequel. Sort of a "look how far we've gone" kind of thing.

Thank you! That's really fascinating. I had no idea such extensive accessibility functions where even available. Much less in a triple A title. I might still need a friend for it, though, just to lend me their PS4...

Does this mean I can have a youtube channel where I make my boyfriend do various things I can't do, and offer commentary? That would be neat.

If you do, and it works out, let me know what you did right :)

Hello from one blind gamer to another! I’m so happy to learn there are more of us out there! I listen to a lot of let’s plays, read a lot of walkthroughs, and try to find game scripts to play video games on my own. It’s very time consuming and a lot of dying, yet I enjoy it all the same. I mostly play JRPGS for their long in-depth stories and characters. I will gladly subscribe to your channel.

That's great to hear! Now I can confidently tell my friends that they are not just serving me, but the entire group of blind gamers!

I am also a blind gamer. Just subscribed to your channel! Do you enjoy RTS GAMES LIKE COMMAND AND CONQUER OR Starcraft?
mostlymarius [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Thanks for the sub! I actually used to enjoy them very much. Played a lot of C&C and age of empires as a kid, as well as tons of brood war. Later I played starcraft 2 when it came out. I loved the fast pace of RTS games. Strategizing under pressure means you kind of have to learn these games like a musical instrument.

Incidentally, my buddy Rene is pretty good at SC2. At least that's what he claims. We actually talk about it somewhat regularly. So all things considered, it would be great to record some SC2 videos. However, the very fast pace that I love also makes it very difficult to narrate what is happening. If anyone has any ideas how this could be done, I would be genuinely very much curious.
