As a blind person, what problems do you face while cooking?(self.Blind)
submitted by dlee_
I just want to understand any struggles blind & visually impaired people encounter while cooking. This could be during the meal prep (chopping, slicing, measuring), cooking (boiling, sautéing, frying), or post meal cleanup process (dishwashing). Or it could be navigating the kitchen and finding things. Anything about struggling being in the kitchen would be helpful. Thanks everybody!

The biggest issue I have is liquid measurement. I end up losing more liquid when trying to pour a teaspoon of something since I intentionally spill it to make sure the spoon is full, and try to do it over a bowl to catch the spillage. Then I use a funnel to recapture the spilled liquid back into it's bottle, but that's not always possible. I don't always keep oils in the fridge, even though cold olive oil is much easier to feel with a fingertip when trying to measure it out. There are devices that make an audible tone when you are about to overfill a glass, but that doesn't really work when trying to measure out small and specific amounts.

I made a questionnaire about cooking while blind as well. I would love if you can fill it out, thanks! $1

Do you think using a pipette or syringe or dropper would help with the liquid measurement problem? In the case of a syringe it could maybe have a click function to indicate whether it’s a tea spoon or table spoon etc? Clean up could be difficult tho🤔

A pipette or a baster could help, but yeah, cleanup would be unfortunate especially when dealing with recipes that call for a variety of different liquids. You wouldn't want to cross-contaminate the liquids and would need dedicated basters/pipettes per liquid.

True, cross contamination would be less than ideal. and I would assume that having to have dedicated pipettes for every liquid could end up being an unnecessary expense 😕

Making sure meat is cooked fully is tough since you can't see it. A meat thermometer helps but is tricky with ground meat, for example. Clean up isn't hard but it's highly unlikely that you get all of the mess since you can't see it. They usually have someone check the kitchen once they're done to clean up the areas they may have missed.
