I woke up today and I saw my visually impaired brother (0 sight at all) crying because he's having difficulty reading braille. I'm his older brother, completely fine. I wanna learn how to read braille so i could teach it to him, any ideas, advice how to start?

We need some more information to provide good assistance.
How old is your brother? When did he lose his vision? How long has he been reading braille? Where did he learn to read braille? What was he reading? was he reading it on paper or on a braille display? What was he struggling with?

he's 13, he was born without any vision. he had some tutor for years but she got married and moved away. he has a typewriter looking machine, which I believe is the braille machine, he uses that to type and read things paper. he was struggling to understand what he's touching.

thank you so much.

I'm still struggling to understand the problem. Could you ask him to explain in his own words why he was crying? Since he was born blind and has been reading braille for a while, I'm surprised that he was finding something this difficult, so I'd like to help him if I can.

Braille makes me cry and I'm 41 years old. It's not very easy.

I don't think you learned braille as a school-age child, so it's not a fair comparison. That being said, some children do struggle, often due to poor teaching, but that may not necessarily be the reason in this case; we need more information.

ok, but how much Braille has he learned, what specific area is he having difficulty in, I learned some Braille memory tricks when I was like ten learning Braille, I could maybe talk you both through it on Skype or something. ? I have one of those Braille typewriter machines the most popular model is known as Perkins Brailler, I've had my same machine for like my whole life still runs perfectly.

I know this may be controversial but learning braille isn't a necessity nowadays, with the technology we have access to. Someone in my family is VI and went through years of braille instruction when he was young and could never grasp it or fully learn it. The teachers eventually gave up on him. It was a bigger deal back then but now, one of the only inconveniences it's brought him is not being able to read the menu at a restaurant and well...that's all I can think of. I'm saying this bc I don't want him to think it's the end of the world. It's really not. And don't feel dumb if you don't get it. It's really hard and you shouldn't feel too frustrated or ashamed for not being able to learn it.

Hey I am a dude 29 m and would love to talk to both of you about Braille.
Also, I was considering studying Braille and getting myself professionally certified in it so I can transcribe for school boards and libraries.
