My husband finally got his white cane! (self.Blind)
submitted by AwkwardAng
My husband began losing his sight in October 2019. He was legally blind by December. He struggled In the beginning to accept what was happening to him. Then COVID hit and he wasn't able to access many resources for a while. We have now moved to a bigger city so getting around for him has become more challenging as the traffic lights don't speak. He has finally started working with someone and received his white cane! I am so excited for him to start feeling more independent again!

TLDR: husband lost his sight 9 months ago and COVID prevented him access to resources. He has finally received his white cane and is learning to use it. We are excited for him to gain his independence back.

That's great, I'm looking forward to getting O&M training soon.

If you aren't aware of it, and should you ever need itm the NFB (National Federation fot he Blind) has a free white cane program. There are no strings attached, and they will send a free white cane to anyone that needs it (In the US, at least- I don't know if they do that for other countries). No membership requires, just fill out the form and let them know what size cane you need and they will send one. It took a little over a week for me to get mine when I signed up.

Wishing you all the best with your training!

My husband got his cane free. Thanks for sharing the resource.

They don't do it for other countries. But be aware that they don't fold and are made of a lighter material with a different tip than many canes

When I first lost my sight when I was a teen, I didn't want to use my cane because I felt like the odd one out. After a few mishaps including falling down stairs, falling off a curb, and almost getting hit by a car, I decided to use it and screw what people might think of it. I prefer using a guide dog these days but still do use my cane sometimes.

Is is feeling awkward using the cane but seems to be positive about it. He has walked into a wall or two so hopefully he will get more comfortable with it. I am happy that you did. It's neat you have a dog! Hubby doesn't want any animals but maybe that will change later.

Hey I'm very happy for you and him! I'm very sorry that he lost his sight though. God bless him and you and that God helps him through everything! All the best and take care!

Have him try a couple. My wife likes a long aluminum one in the city but will take a lighter, shorter graphite one when hiking
