Question about white canes (self.Blind)
submitted by [deleted]
Hi everyone,
I was recently told that because of my limited field of vision, I should use a white cane. I have a few questions and I am very thankful for your answers.

Firstly, I looked for some canes on ambutech’s website and I’ve noticed that graphite and aluminum canes have their new conical joints that are much shorter than the joints on their fiberglass canes. If any of you use their canes can you please tell me are these new conical joints stable qnd do they lock in priperly because they seem very short in comparison to the joints on ambutech’s fiberglass canes, but apparently fiberglass canes are heavy. I need a 54 or 56in cane so that’s why I’m asking.

And finally, regarding the Revolution Advantage canes, if any of you guys use them, are they sturdy and are their slip-on cane tips wobbly?

Thank you very much for your answers and have a nice day!

If anything, I find the new conical joints more sturdy.

Thank you so much! I’m very torn on the topic of the joints because I’ve heared from some people that the new conical ones will just pop themselves loose if you have a cane longer than 52in and that they can come out really crooked if you have a cane with more than four sections.

Well, my cane's not longer than 52in, but it is 7-section (I wanted to be able to make it as compact as possible). Thus far, it's been very stable/sturdy.

I have ordered 2 Revolution white canes carbon graphite trough my O&M shop teacher. Theyre light and comfortable but never ever again, first broke very quickly just after 11 months of use in such way that it couldn't be repaired in meantime the rolling tip felt off 2 times they just glued it back - you can't replace it alone easily just like in Ambutech. The second backup one is clearly too tight made I often can't fold it, the white tape started peeling off after 6 months in multiple places, tips felt apart in half 3 times in 3 years. For both of them I issued warranties repair and for replacements but no. It was so hard to find someone who would mount those stupid tips.

Thats why my next one will be Ambutech sadly I didn't known that there are more companies out there my O&M teacher didn't informed me about that (she had business in this that was her shop in school) but now I know how I order myself and I found about Ambutech recently. I wish I could choose custom color options :) but in Germany its not available only in neighborhoods countries. I can order only cane per 2-3 years if/or I don't have any anymore which is now the case.

Graphite connections are leaving dark smudges on fingers and chlotes they're washable. But I have read that fiberglass doesn't handle bumps and shocks, temperature changes over time as well as graphite. My next one would be graphite too I think. Go with regular version not the slim one - slim one has inside only one thread if it breaks you have to buy whole new cane, in regular there are two threads if one of them breaks it still holds and you can go back home.

I would definitely recommend Graphite over Fiberglass or Aluminum, the lighter your cane the less joint damage you will suffer.
As for Ambutech, my fiancee tells me she doesn't like them because they're super heavy.
Have you considered getting just one of the free canes from the NFB?
They will send you two free canes every year, my Fiancee has used these canes for years and quite likes them.

Thank sou so much for your answer! I don’t live in the US. Where I’m from you can’t just sigh up for a cane. Even worse thing is that when you have to get registered as a blind or visually impaired person, you have to repeat the process a few times(I’ve been doing it for three years now) because the government doesn’t want to give out disability checks.

Well now that's some bullshit! How is it even possible to be worse than the states when it comes to making the world accessible?
[deleted] [OP] 2 points 2y ago
It is possible, because if you are a child of a high official in the government or some other shit, they would give you all the privileges even if your vision is totally fine, but when you are just a common high school senior, like me or any other “ordinary” person, you have to nag them for ages to at least get some benefits from all your problems.

Where I live none of the American or Western European cane stores ship products here. I had to order my canes from Ali Express, and it's hit or miss there, since they have 0 variety whatsoever, only different lengths.
