Visually impaired friend mentioned that he can't watch shows like Vikings because they switch to different languages(with subtitles) throughout it and he doesn't know whats being said. Is there anything out there to help with this? (self.Blind)

Basically an English dub but just for the parts that aren't English.

Vikings now has audio description on either Netflix, Amazon, both or neither, depending on where you live. Where does he live?

Does audio description also voice over the non-english parts? He seemed to have been under the impression they weren't. I havnt checked.

Audio description is available for the first 3 seasons on Netflix in Canada. I'm not sure if it's available on Prime or any other streaming services. I've never listened to audio description that doesn't read subtitles.

audio description will read subtitles if they're in English of course.
Shows without descriptions can have subtitles read on iOS certainly - voiceOver will do that.

So recently I finished this Netflix show called Away and all of the major characters on the ship's mission to Mars are from different nations, so the describing team had to figure out subtitles, and so they had one narrator for main action and a few for subtitles. Netflix does that with a few of their shows with subtitles.

It has the audio description tracks from movies and tv shows. It is free and you can download the tracks and listen anytime. I’m totally blind and use it all time! I just finished listening to Vikings season two. There are also other popular current television and movies on there as well.

I don't think so. To break it down step by step you'd need:
* A way to catch and translate the subtitles
* A way to translate only the subtitles where the language changes
* a way to interface subtitles to screen reader - exists - but only the non-english ones - doesn't exist to my knowledge

Sighted viewers who don't need subtitles only see subtitles for non-English parts. When a blind person hears dialogue in a languagethey don't understand, they could use VoiceOver to read these subtitles.

Even so, that would still require catch, translate and relay to screen reader, which is not going to be reliable since automatic translation services generally aren't reliable as far as the quality of translation.

I don't understand why you think you would need to translate anything. The text is displayed on-screen, and VoiceOver can read it, in addition to the audio description narrator. If you don't understand what I mean, listen to the first few minutes of the show Giri/Haji with VoiceOver set to read subtitles. Don't change your subtitle settings in Netflix though. If you don't have Netflix, listen to an Apple TV+ trailer and turn subtitles on.

Oh well there are programs that do this, but a hacky sort of way to do it is an NVDA addon called Lion.
