I was 19, I've been there. Yes, the envying people, I know. There is no quick fix but I will say what I say to everyone. Most people sit there feeling like you are and thinking well, I'll wait until I feel better about things, then I'll look up my buddies and find a job and all that stuff. Unfortunately that's the wrong way round. You won't start feeling better about stuff until you start doing stuff. You'll never feel better if you just sit around at home. You have to start doing stuff like going out with your buddies and looking for education or work or whatever before you really feel ready. That's sort of the deal. Someone below says that doing normal life stuff shouldn't be a job or a task to be completed but I think it will be for a while. It is possible to run this situation like a pro, you have to learn how and that is a process and it sucks, but if you don't do it you'll never have done it and things will continue to feel nasty.

There is no quick fix.

Oh and you can shoot guns, you'll just generally have someone standing behind you making various alarmed noises. Somewhere there is video of me doing it. People are very afraid.

Do you know that blind people can study biology, make friends, be charitable, have relationships, watch movies and kayak? How you do these things now may be different, but you can still do almost all of them.

Of course he knows. It’s not about believing things are suddenly impossible, but accessing established vectors of happiness/excitement that are gone. Sure, he can find enjoyment in the same or other activities, but they are different experiences. He is lamenting the loss of this. Other, previously inaccessible avenues of enjoyment can always be constructed.

Not a dig at you, as I’m positive you meant only to help, but I also don’t think it’s constructive to treat these activities as quasi-“tasks” that can still be completed.
