I’m a huge Daredevil fan and I wanted to go as Matt Murdock for Halloween this year- planning to wear a suit, red sunglasses, etc. Since he uses a walking stick I was going to order one on Amazon to use for this but I was concerned about this possibly being disrespectful? I feel I may be acting overly cautious but the last thing I want to do is disrespect the blind community, or take away supplies that could be needed by people with sight impairments. Also, is there an organization/charity where I could donate the walking stick after the fact so it could go to someone who needs it who maybe can’t afford one? Again, I apologize if this is a stupid question, just want to be sure. Thanks!
EDIT: i meant a cane, not a walking stick! i thought the terms were interchangeable but now i know that they aren’t. thanks!

He has horns too, right? I mean if you wear that version of the suit it'd be pretty darn clear you're Daredevil from Marvel Comics and not, say, some random blind person. The latter I would personally find offensive, but Daredevil's a fictional character. Have at it fam.

well i specifically wanted to do the alter ego (not the superhero costume), but using the signature red sunglasses and probably some fake blood to make it clear who it was meant to be, if that makes sense. would that be okay?

I’ll be totally honest with you... blind people (myself included0 generally don’t care about this stuff, and for the outliers who are oversensitive , they are blind, good chance they don’t even see your costume prop. but, you may run into problems with the sighted people, who have never had 1 interaction with a blind person in their lives, being offended by the costume prop

thanks for letting me know! just wanted to be sure :)

In my opinion, it's all good. But I'm just one person. I wonder what the rest of the community thinks.

a) Walking sticks are called canes.
b) It depends upon your region as to what charity you want, but probably you would donate to National Federation for the Blind, unless you live in Canada the Canadian National Institute for the Blind.
c) I am totally blind and my brother once made me a Dare Devil mask so we could chill at the Comic Con in Toronto with me as Matt Murdock and him as a storm trooper from Star Wars. I got a couple cool photos from that day.

I think, as long as it’s super clear you’re trying to be dare devil or one of his alter egos, it’s totally fine. Also, it’s called a cane not a walking stick lol. You could probably donate it to your local blind resource center after you’re done using it - provided you use an actual cane and not just some random stick. They’re not in short supply or anything but blind organizations and local resource centers provide them to blind people for free if they have extras so if you donate it, they’ll probably pass it along to someone who will need it. Another option is possibly the local school district.

my bad lol, the one i found on amazon was listed as “red folding walking stick” so i went with that lol. thanks a bunch for the info!!

Then it's not a white cane of the kind that blind people use.
lgbtbanner [OP]1 points2y ago
it was!! just improperly named i think

Go for it! Honestly, blind people have a great sense a humor so it's all good. Many homeless people are blind and can't afford canes. I would try donating it to a homeless shelter and they can give it to a blind homeless person. Otherwise, they end up wandering out into traffic and it's scary.

perfect i’ll look for a shelter near me!! thanks :)

Of course, have a fun Halloween!

First, its called a Cane. A walking stick is used for balance and its generally used by older people. I think its cool. Go for it. You also need a billy-club of some kind.

First off, it's called a cane, not a stick. That's really the only thing about this that bugs me. You wanna dress up as Daredevil? Go right ahead. You'll probably face more backlash from sighted people than us. We're pretty lax about these sorts of things as long as they're all in good fun. Hell, last year someone was dressing up as Daredevil and wanted to stick giant googly eyes on the mask. People here thought it was hilarious.

my mistake, thought the terms were interchangeable but thanks for letting me know!

I don’t care what you look like, have fun

I don’t see it as offensive, but please for the love of all things holy don’t just wave it around randomly. One of the best things about Netflix’s Daredevil was the beautiful attention to detail. The cane technique he uses is perfect and beautiful. Watch like a video on cane technique and you’ll be good to go.

was mostly planning to just put it on to take some pics but if i end up going out i’ll def keep this in mind, thanks!
