Be My Eyes Volunteer (self.Blind)
submitted by bbycockroach
I am a sighted volunteer for Be My Eyes and I just got off of a call. I helped a gentleman read off of a screen but I had to ask for frequent camera adjustment due to no fault of his own. Simply just a mild occurrence of the phone camera not focusing properly. He had kept apologizing to me, but it really was no trouble at all. I really enjoy being able to offer my assistance to people. And I especially enjoy talking to new people, even if only for a couple of moments. I am a fairly lonely person and it absolutely makes my day to be able to have this interaction through Be My Eyes. However, I could tell that this gentleman felt burdened to have to ask for assistance. I just want to put this out there that as a volunteer, I love interacting with people, and I encourage others to not second guess themselves on reaching out. I have talked to all sorts of people through the app, and I am always looking forward to my next call.

The registration is simple! For me it just asked for my email, a password, and a preferred language.

How do I volunteer?

All you have to do is download the “Be My Eyes” app, create an account (free), and then wait for a call. Sometimes I don’t receive a call for weeks at a time, so don’t worry if it takes a while for you to be able to volunteer. Just make sure you have the notifications on for the app!

Im super late to this comment thread, but, how does the call, or the notification itself work? Does it have its own ringer, like a normal phone call? Can one have settings on times you arent available for calls at all, so you dont get requested at certain times? Is it rude or counterproductive to sign up, when often times youll have to refuse calls? I want to volunteer, but I live in a weird timezone, and Im going to college, so often I would be sleeping, or in tests, or in classes, where I wont be able to answer, and Id appreciate no notifications or calls at those times
