Movie with blind female lead character (self.Blind)
submitted by SalvadorP
Hello everyone.

I have been writing a film script with a blind female character as the protagonist. The film isn't necessarily about blindness, and that's the whole point, to make a film focused on a blind person without making it all about blindness. Anyway, she is an South European, working class, low income, late twenties early thirties woman living with her mother. She works a fulltime job. Initially I had thought of making her somewhat defy the odds and "gave her" a job as a housekeeper at a hotel, with the condition that she was mainly changing sheets and doing laundry and those activities more easily accessible to a completely blind person. The idea behind it was giving her a job that most people don't expect a blind person to be doing, while not being unrealistic at the same time. But since then I've changed the script a little bit and I'm considering ditching the housekeeping idea. I don't want her to work a tech job either.

Can you guys throw me ideas of suitable jobs for a blind person? I'm aware that given the right training a blind person can do almost any job. And I've read innumerous lists of jobs for visually impared people. I'm just looking for ideas, maybe jobs you, or people you know, have had.

Thanks to everyone in advance.

what about a telephonist? call centre style worker helping people deal with some issue/trying to sell them cable packages or some such similar thing. I knew a girl who was a receptionist at a law firm once too.

I would like to avoid call centre/receptionist mostly because it's a bit cliche. I've seen several films in with blind people working desk jobs and in particular call centre.

That's the reason I made that initial choice of the housekeeping, to have something more hands on. Know what I mean?

I hear you. Thanks for the reply. But remember, it's a working class lady. I'm looking for something more Primary or Secondary sectors, meaning industry, manufactoring, etc. Working at a kitchen, maybe a school/hospital cafeteria or something like that could be an option though.

What would be the most likely roles of a visually impared person in such scenario? Maybe meal prep?

My grandpa who was also visually impaired was an upholsterer if that helps! It’s a genetic thing so I can tell you about the jobs some of my family members do.

Yes, any ideas are welcome. I also thought of cashier at a supermarket or fish process/cleaning at a supermarket or fish processing factory.

That’s actually a super interesting choice! My father and brother work in HR, my uncle is a construction worker, my great grandfather was a musician, and I’m studying to be a translator/interpretor.
