Portable Video Magnifier Recommendations (self.Blind)
submitted by gick22
Hi everyone!

I am looking to buy 2 portable video magnifier devices. 1) A portable device with a larger screen (about 7 inches) to use at home and 2) a smaller portable device (about 3-4.5 inches) to travel with. I am willing to pay more for a better quality device.
Both devices are for my father who has age related macular degeneration.

For the first device, he doesn't use a lot of technology so I am looking for something easy to use that will assist him. He used to be an avid reader so I am looking for something that will allow him to more easily read to his hearts content.

For the second device, he feels bad having me read menus at restaurants and read cooking instruction labels on food and has mentioned he misses his independence so I would like the smaller portable device for him to bring as much of that back that we can with technology.

I have done some research and was looking at the Zoomax Snow 7 basic for a larger screen device and was wondering if anyone had any experience with the device. I have a list of devices that I was able to find but they have very few reviews.

I really would appreciate your recommendations and thank you for considering this.

A Google pixel smartphone.

seriously, you have a cell phone with a pretty decent camera, if not the relatively cheap to come by. Don't spend your money on something you don't necessarily need.

get a backup charger if you use it in an excessive amount, just don't give your money to these scummy companies that provide mediocre products and services.

If you have an iPhone it will be sufficient. It also has more accessibility features for the blind and isually impaired than any android phone. If the first option doesn’t feel right you can always buy Looky 4 or Looky 5 digital magnifiers. I have the Looky 4 one for 3 months now and it’s serving me really well.

For the smaller one, I use one like this $1 with a handle that swings out. It's okay, but the battery life isn't great. I agree with the phone suggestion, but these video magnifiers also have special options for inverting colors and helping with focus...maybe there are apps that have those now, though.

Check websites like Ebay for used magnification devices. Post COVID-19, he could maybe get a low vision assessment to see what else might help. Also get him signed up for the National Library Service if you live in the U.S. He might like reading books on an iPad. I like the app, VoiceDream Reader. You could also get him a membership to Bookshare. I hope that this helps.

My father uses a jewelers lens to read things with his optic nerve atrophy. They are super cheap on amazon and very portable.
