Product to aid Blind in public Bathrooms (self.Blind)
submitted by domboniface
Hi, I am a product design student and for my final project I am developing a product to help Blind people navigate Pubic and disabled bathrooms. Would a product like this be useful in bathrooms or is it unnecessary? Is sound the best Navigation tool in a bathroom?
Hope to hear some responses
Thanks

Not blind but my fiance is. Main issues would be colour contrast (don't make everything in the bathroom the same colour) and finding where the stalls/sinks/dryer/exit are and not going round and round in circles.

In terms of the colour contrast, Would a different coloured light help, for example if there was a blue light over the toilet and a orange light over the sink?

Mainly dark/light contrast e.g. dark walls and light appliances. You could use textured flooring to indicate location of things as well

Maybe for some, though I would worry that the different hews of light would bleed into each other. I think a better way to work with contrasts would be with the surfaces themselves. For those who have useable vision, the colours are more likely to stand out.

I used to have useable vision, and something like that would have worked for me.

Thanks that's very useful.
For the sound aspect, if there was a speaker in certain positions, say a certain sound around the position of the sink, would something like that be helpful?

Potentially, yes. The sound would have to be passive, and unobtrusive. No-one wants their visit to the bathroom to be cacophonous.

"something that I would love would be a motion sensing speaker for single use bathrooms. When the door is closed and it has detected a person in the room, a short recording of the bathroom's layout would be played. It would potentially limit the touching of unnecessary and unclean surfaces in new or unfamiliar layouts.

Hi, I spoke to my lecturer about my thoughts and product ideas and suggested something similar to this, he thought it was a good idea but had his reservations about the broadness of the product. Is there any other situation where a product like this could be used?

Thanks, this is all very useful. My original idea was a product to go on the back of a door in a single use bathroom, that way anyone that needs it will know exactly where the door is as they would be next to it already and could easily find it. A motion sensor is a great suggestion though and potentially a lot easier than what I originally thought.
