Recommendations for a Screen Reader With on-the-fly Voice Changing or Tone Changing As Determined by The Read Text? (self.Blind)
submitted by Boy__Blue95
Hi all,

Someone I know is looking for a screen reader that has well defined tone and or voice changes based on symbols. For example Hello and /Hello/ should both be distinctly different, whether through tone or voice changes. The symbols used are unimportant, just that the functionality exists. The idea is to streamline the process of allowing people to listen to a fictional work that contains a character with internal and external monologue. This is done with the consideration of making the work more accessible, not to add flavor for people that have no difficulty visually reading. This all said, we are both people that can visually read easily and may be completely missing the mark. If there is a better solution, I'm all ears! Feel free to ask any questions you'd like. The content is hosted on Archive of Our Own, a website for fictional work, so that may make a difference in software recommendations. Thank you!

You could make emacspeak do this

Could you use font or text attributes instead of slashes? If so, JAWS would work.

Generally voices follow the characteristics of English, i.e. To raise pitch at the end of a question, to pause at a comma and so forth.

That said, when I read fiction I use a different voice for narrative and spoken content within a novel. Some text to speech engines will support tags midtext to change things. Have a look at SSML for an example. :)

If you type in fan fiction tts into youtube you can hear this kind of thing but screen readers can’t do that out of the box as far as I know.

SSML does come to mind, yes, or similar, speech engine-specific tags to denote such things.

Yeah I don't think that exists. Most screen readers can change a voice based on language, but that's about it .
